I was a part of a 25-man guild during the beta. Most of us did PvE mostly, and others PvP (~30%). During that time I noticed that finishing a dynamic event gave far less influence than a match in structured PvP. Those 30% of us that did PvP rewarded our guild with 2-3 times more influence points in total than the majority that did PvE.

What do you think why is that? Does it mean that PvP is more important and PvP players will be more welcome in guilds?

Or is it to compensate for no other rewards in structured PvP?

I think it means you didn't hit level 30, didn't do any dungeons, and can't really judge the full game on a 2 day beta.

So, in higher level PvE content influence gain will be higher than doing PvP?

edit: ...or somewhat balanced?

Isn't influence the guild based currency?

I know in WvW I had like 2k extra in 2 guilds I was in. They mostly played WvW. And I thought of it as a PvP reward specifically.

After reading your post, I am starting to wonder if there are other ways to gain influence.

edit: yes influence is guild currency for guild upgrades.

Well, as far as I know influence is gained by doing WvW (by completeling the objectives/events there), playing structured PvP and by doing dynamic events in PvE.

You also get a small amount of influence for each member logging in each day. Also, it would seem like you get a lot more influence when doing stuff together with the guild, than separately. For the few events that the three members in my guild managed to do together, we got a lot more influence (three-fold? even more?) than when we were doing events separately. Not tried PvP, so can't comment on influence gain on that.

I don't know. I just wanted to point out that the max level is 80 and dungeons don't even start until 30, so it's hard to say which activities will be the most rewarding.

During the BWE, structured PvP matches ran back to back without pause. You could get a lot of games in a relatively short amount of time.

What were your PvE friends doing during their time? Exploring? Doing dynamic event segments? Crafting?

It's possible that the people who spent time in PvP ended up spending more time doing things that reward influence.

I'd think that doing a 5 man PvE dungeon, especially on hard mode, would be fairly rewarding.

That's great! I know that we did PvE mostly separately and PvP we did together as a party, that could be a reason for such a big difference in influence gain.

Don't take my word for an absolute fact though. It just how I remember it feeling, and I did do some basic calculations with the numbers as well, unfortunately I never took any screenshots of the guild activity log. It would seem to fit with the design principles though, you know with getting people to play together and all... I'll try to experiment with this a bit during next BWE, see how it works.

On the latest episode of Tales of Tyria Team Legacy mentioned that they got more influence from playing PvE together than playing WvW. Not sure what activities they did exactly, but I'm sure some of them did the Ascalon Catacombs since I watched a stream of that.

In one of the blogs you can find that when you play with guild members you generate more influence than playing alone. Good hunting!
