At least that's the way things are shaping up. To be honest, I was very skeptical of both games at this time last year. The hype on both has been insane. The devs seemed equally arrogant. From Bioware we got, "We're going to revolutionize mmorpgs because we're Bioware and we know how to do rpg like no other company can imagine." From ArenaNet we got, "We're going to revolutionize mmorpgs because we've seen what's stale in the genre and we know how to fix it."

Bioware over-promised and under-delivered at almost every turn. The story was good, the voice acting that they were hanging their fortunes on was great, imo. But the rest of the game was as sloppy as could be. As I state in my review, "A lot of people over at Bioware made a lot of money for doing very little work." Considering the budget and who the developer was, this should have been a game that revolutionized mmo's but I believe Bioware was blinded by their perception of their own greatness.

As for GW2, I thought they were sort of painting themselves in a corner with their whole "no holy trinity" thing that they announced so long ago. Had their mechanics not worked they left themselves no room to change. At the same time, they were taking SO DARN LONG to release (I found an old article that announced possible release as early as 2008) that I thought this might become the Duke Nukem Forever of the mmo market. Of course, with no release date yet and a ton of game content still not available in beta this is still possible. But what I found after playing beta is that ArenaNet actually under-promised and over-delivered. So much of this game was new and unexpected. For my money, GW2 actually has a chance to significantly change the genre moving forward like no other game has.

Admittedly, I was more nit-picky with swtor probably because I was having so much less fun with it than I did with GW2. When I do a final review of GW2 after launch I will be looking for more to nit-pick.

As an aside, I think GW2 puts Tera in some jeopardy, too, because the main thing Tera has going for it is combat and I think GW2 does combat as well if not better.

I'd say TOR is exactly the game it should be. Two huge corporation piggybacking a billion dollar IP making a AAA 300 million dollar game in a span of 3 years where most of the budget has gone to voice actors. Then pushed hte game out super early by either cutting previously announced features or postponing them.  All this to beat their Winter Quarterly Report for their stockholders.

INitial interviews were "This will not be a wow clone" to later interviews that implied that WOW was not so bad and that gamers want "familiarity" .

GW2 is more like what Asheron's Call 2 should have been in my opinion... :)

Well, llike the folks over at massively said. Most people look at Tera and they don't really compare it to WoW like every other MMO, instead they compare it to Aion. Aion is now f2p, so many think it should be f2p. I also hope it goes f2p at some point. Also, koreans themselves love pvp. That's the main reason GW was popular in asia, I expect the same for GW2.

I don't bash TOR too much, it had a lot of positives. One of which was good technical execution - the game mostly just worked.

Unfortunately, at the end of the day I didn't find it much fun, especially PvP.

GW2 isn't perfect, but I feel pretty confident that even if everything was stripped out except WvW, I'd still be playing for quite a while.

yeah, the sad part is.everyone who plays wow seems to have the mindset of every mmo coming out eather

1.is trying to copy it

2.are so obsessed with arguing with everyone that it will not kill wow

whatever happened to you know, variety in the mmo genre being a good thing

oh and on the subject of sw tor.i doubtt it will even be a pay to play mmo before the end of the year.bioware obviously fails at the mmo thing

Easy one, why do they keep making clones.

money.  Wow makes some , what 100 million bucks a month with its current subscribers. Sure a clone won't make anywhere near that, but because it's not taking risks with new game play or pushing something innovative, it can bet on at least attracking the MMO NOmad for a few months, maybe even keep a few on permanetly.

Why in the world would someone trying to make money attempt to do something different?  That's why everything feels fairly the same.  YOu don't get anymore than 1 or 2 new innovations. No one wants to take a chance and make a completely new game.

All the while, these clones make the genere even more stale and either drive away gamers or create the MMO Nomad, the folk who just mindlessly jump from wow clone to wowclone looking for the fountain of youth.  So enamered by this quest, the MMO Nomad rise up to fight anyone who doesn't make them their next clone.

To be fair, the model actually works in terms of game-play so in my opinion people probably should make clones. I think that's why I like Rift so much - the mechanics are tried and true but Rift just did most of their game better than the other clones and, I think, better than WoW in many respects.

GW2, though, should not be considered a clone. Comparing the WvW aspect to other games is fair, but in many aspects GW2 is doing things very differently than what we've seen before. GW2 will give other companies a launching point to expand into whole new ideas and new ways of doing things so that, 10 years from now, we may not see games being released that look anything like the WoW model.

Tera is a crap game with a crap engine as well and worst graphics than gw2.

Swtor on the other hand is a single player with subscription with trash engine as well.

Really i dont see any competition between gw2 tera and swtor.

Gw2 is tons of miles away leaving other mmos eating thick dust in their mouths.

Gw2 beta was a lot of fun.The only thing that dissapointed me was that the game was cpu based but hopefuly this will be fixed at release.Lets hope it will run smooth like water at release otherwise it will be another crap engine on the market.

Believe me if the game is not running smooth even if it's the game of the year it will become a total fail in the end.

Im currently having 980x 12 gigs ram gtx 580 sli and i can see very clearly if a game has a crap engine or if it needs a better rig.

Im my experience tera and swtor have  shitty engines.

Waiting to see what kind of engine gw2 has to deliver if it does not support sli and it runs like bullshit then good bey gw 2 as well.

People still dont undestand that there is a lot of people who still play and love SWTOR. I will play GW2, tried the beta, but as a war veteran all i can say is that GW2 is pretty much a warhammer clone, and when finally people will have the chance to play it for more than 3 days, you´ll see all the problems that the game have. GW2 is a casual MMO, i mean while in a game like TSW u have more than 500 skills (both games have the same system, but in TSW you play the role that you want, they dont have levels, or classes) in gw2 you unlock all ur weapons skills at level 5. Im not trolling, but you guys talking about GW2 like something huge and epic, when the game is really far far away from that, and games like TSW as an example are more complex, depth or innovative than GW2, I will play it knowing that it will be a casual game, they dont even have a competitive pvp system so far, if you are waiting for something different then sry, but we will find a lot of disappointed people.

I agree with you. I love that they used the 3 teams instead of just 2, like every other mmo :l
