This isn't new, though. I've encountered this with WoW like three years back - had nothing to do and wanted to play with an American friend of mine, couldn't do it. Not exactly ANet's fault, but definitely a chance missed.

That is pretty strange, back when I was playing WoW I played on business trips to Thailand, UK and the US with no IP restriction.

Hehehehe....."business trip to thailand"

I went to a financial responsibility seminar in vegas too.

Hahaha that does sound dodgy now that I think of it. I am actually an Environmental Scientist that remediates contaminated sites, like after oil spills and such. No ladyboy action.

I'm betting 5 dollars(broke as a joke) that you'll play as an asura...

was I right?

I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

The funny part ist, the best prevention for europeans to buy the US version is, that they will probably only accept credit cards. Many europeans don't have one and those who do, are reluctant to use them for online shopping.

And the sad part is, that they will probably only accept credit cards for prepurchase in europe, too...

Jeez. I am aware that most Americans think the world centres on Uncle Sam but this has to be one of the most stupid things I have seen posted in a LONG time.

WTF makes you think that we Europeans have/use any less credit cards than you in the USA ? And we are reluctant to use our credit cards for online shopping - LOL

If you are not an American then I apologise but I would bet money you are.

BTW - This is not meant to be a criticism of Americans per se, it's just that comments like these give you a bad press.

EDIT:

And believe it or not we Europeans have also discovered how to use bank accounts as well so we can also use PayPal to prepurchase games.

Dude. I'm sorry, but why were you playing WoW when you were in Thailand?

+10... I near fell out of my chair with this one ,the sad  fact  is this one point will fly right over the head of 95% of the folks is a classic

Because I was working there in an isolated part of the country and not there on a holiday? And I enjoy playing games with people back home which helps me keep in contact? The novelty of being in another country wears off after a while.

With your logic, why do you play games at all? Surely you have something better to do?

I bet the solution will be simply contacting a customer service and asking them to change your lock from eu>us or us to eu.

It didn't work in the first game. Brought game in EU as lived there, moved to NA couple of months later and I still connect through EU servers 200-400ping. Get the same ping on NA servers. I can play anywhere but there is something wrong with the data server region lock in GW1. Support told me it's my router lol.

Yes we can probably work around it with proxy and VPN, but we shouldn't have to. Region locking is just fucking stupid.

Here is a better idea, dont rip the EU customers off in the first place! Then they will buy the EU version.

150€ for the CE is just insane...

150$ <> 150€  even including taxes....this conversions are way off

when you factor in VAT taxes and shipping, it's not really off by much.

Digital is dead on:

Digital Deluxe: $79.99, €75
NL VAT = 19%
Exclude the VAT: €75 * 0.81 = €60.75
@ 30-3 1 euro = 1.33-1.34 USD
€60.75 * 1.33 = $80.80
80.80/79.99 = 1.01
Difference: 1%

You make some mistakes. If the price is including VAT, then excluding VAT is (75/119)*100. This is not the same as 75*0.81 The american price is the base, so that one is 100% . Taxes are on top of that.

Digital Deluxe : 75 euro, which is $98.01. This means that NCSoft (I assume) calculates 22.53% VAT.

Players in eastern Europe are fucked. They have low minimum wages, low VAT rates and still pay top euro price. I also wonder what the UK will have to pay extra on top of VAT. Theirs is 20% I think.

On-topic :

I guess what matters for travellers is how they will manage their account over 2 regions. Two copies doesn't automatically solve that, because it is not sure if you can access your account from a different region with the right copy of the game.

EDIT : I wonder if you can even use the listed american prices as reference. These are with 10% sales tax included right? If so, then the export price is lower, because sales tax gets replaced with VAT when exporting? This would make the price increase for EU even higher.

"Is my copy of Guild Wars 2 tied to my region?

Yes. To play from North America you must purchase a North American copy of the game. To play from Europe you must purchase a European copy of the game. Note that this restriction impacts where you can play from, not which game worlds you can choose to play on.

By purchasing the correct copy of the game, you're supporting the game in your country, and you'll be connecting to your local data center, using your local customer support team, and downloading the correct language support for your country."

As someone who is living overseas for the remainder of this year this is just annoying. So when I get home I will no longer be able to play the copy I purchased while in Europe? Very lame if they go ahead with this.

Jumping the gun a little too early? I don't think they would do this without making an option available to transfer your game to avoid paying for it twice. If that was the case I would also be surprised.

I'm almost certain, or would hope if you were to contact them and give them proof of previous purchase, they may let you download a digital version for your zone/region? Don't be too annoyed yet I guess.

Not really jumping the gun when they release this info on the last day of trade before pre-purchase.

What they state is very clear, its a restriction, if the solution was as simple as contacting customer support and saying 'Oh hai, I have the Euro version but want the NA version, plz change!' then there is no point having a restriction in the first place is there?

I think most people impacted by the restriction would rather have the issue clarified by ArenaNet before Tuesday.

Besides, ArenaNet have already acknowledged that they overlooked travellers with this announcement and that this is a problem that requires a solution, so its not a case of being oversensitive. The fact that they are looking into it is reassuring, but I will continue to be concerned until they provide an adequate solution. Anyone in the same boat is unlikely to pre-order until they know that they wont be region locked.

Yeah, that was kinda my point. I doubt they would NOT want to accomodate in such a circumstance.

Good luck to ya though.
