I am slowly working my way through L2 and i am amazed at the quality and detail of the gameworld it is stunning and i am finding myself just going for a wander to take it all in. It makes some of the modern games worlds look very ordinary

One of the reasons why we have been saying for years that its the best. Still today it has the best world design.

Never played the game.  First time I saw it was years ago when I was curious about getting into the art of it all.  Found myself wanting to find more pictures of the world content.  On the other hand, though, one thing in common throughout all the images I've seen is that the world seems to lack a bit in the environmental detail department.. as far as eye candy goes.  Things just appear a bit plain although the landscapes are very interesting as a whole.  As far as many MMO games go I'm not berating the art of this game as I've seen much worse.  Merely an observation.

The thing is that the landscapes look believable which is what I like about it. The world looks like something I could actually see in real life. That what makes me get immersed into a games world is if the world can actually make me believe that this is or was possible. Take a look at a game like Aion, the game world is full of eye candy but it just looks too fake and I just cant get past that. Now take a look at a game like ArcheAge. It has the best world design that I have seen since Lineage 2 because it looks like something I would actually see in real life and not some fantasy world that I know is just totally impossible.

L2's world is one that feels believable i found Rifts world very cut and paste , Aions is ok but it is a bit restrictive, The Archeage trailer looks great and having seen another video it looks like the game is very scaleable on low spec machines. I play aion and L2 on my hp amd v140 ati mobile4250 laptop and they both run and look great. A scaleable game engine is so important as i like to play on both my gaming desktop and my laptop with a 3g dongle

I appreciate the links to both.  Seems Aion was going for a much less realistic feel, very true.  Also thanks for introducing me to archeage cuz graphics wise (CryEngine) that looks absolutely sick and is very much the same fashion and direction I wish to take similarly in my game project.
