You can't make an MMORPG revolve around the journey of 9 characters from a book.

1,000s of players can't gravitate around the happenings of so few who's actions are so Scripted.

It doesn't make for a good MMORPG.

The way this is done in LOTRO, letting the player feel that he/she is part of the timeline, and can be, in some cases, the direct reason to why the Fellowship actually succeeds with their task, is a very rewarding experience, at least for players that are fans of the books and films.
