lol...a long long time ago before there was a LoTR movie series there were 3 old fashioned things called books that made up the LoTR trilogy. In FoTR (book 1) Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin had a much longer journey between the Shire and Bree than was depicted in the movie. Part of that trip included escaping from Barrow-wights in an area just south and east of Bree called the Barrowdowns. Just a hunch, but if I had to guess I'd say the mobs so amazingly rendered here are some of those very same Barrow-wights. :-)
