Graphics: The landmasses and environments in this game are absolutely gorgeous and, I feel, really reflect the beauty of Tolkien's work. The character models however are a bit lacking, but still provide a decent avatar to look at.
Sound: Absolutely one of the best qualities of this game. The music itself is wonderfully composed, able to imply mood and atmosphere that fit the environments and actions of the game. Additionally, characters are able to play in bands and other musical organizations of their creation with in game instruments. Stellar presentation.
Role-playing: It's really what you make it. However, I feel that some integrity had to be exchange for the sake of a game. How many hobbits were really ever seen in Rivendell? Did elves often journey to the Shire? Choices of character origin have very little impact, aside from titles and racials.
Fun: This game has its moments that are truly fun. The setting is absolutely enchanting, groups can add great appeal to otherwise drab areas as well. There are several things holding this game back. The combat system is far from engaging. Due to animation choices or mistakes, not sure which, some skills fire slower than others. Also, a large number of skills require an induction that I feel is too long. Hunters are a prime example of this. Runekeepers also lose attunement rather quickly, but that is another discussion. Another detriment to this game is the amount of grind. Virtues require a significant amount of time that lies outside of the leveling process and I feel this sucks the fun out of the game for me. These are necessary character elements and often they are hard to get. With the addition of the store (a feature I feel is poorly implemented) you can acquire that, but this is something I found to be counterproductive and ultimately a game breaker for me.
There are also portions of this game that I find unbearable to play. Moria, while wonderfully designed, is a long and dreadful part of the game with tightly packed mobs and small aggro ranges. For the less strong classes, this presents a large problem as they will find Moria to be a hiccup in their progression.
Performance: Once again, another area that hinders the game. The active cities are laggy, particularly 21st hall, which is to be expected. However, skill activations are slower than should be accepted, server side issues often present themselves and I have experienced several lag wipes. The store, how I loathe it, is the worst feature of this game. I suffers from poor navigation, featuring archaic HTML like drop downs, and is rather slow overall. Sadly, you need a high end computer to really enjoy this game and experience its beauty.
Service: Turbine has always given me great customer service, no qualms or additional comments are necessary.
Value: Overall, if you love Middle Earth or are not interested in other titles, this is a great game to play if you have both the patience and time for it. If you have both of those qualities you will this game a rewarding experience.
Leveling is a bit uneven, around the early to mid 30s I found myself lost for things to do and once again in the mid 40s. This could also be because of how I quested, but I still found myself limited in leveling areas. Overall, this game has become more solo friendly, but with combat being clunky it is more of a chore than something to be enjoyed. For pet classes, this chore is additionally accentuated.
Skirmishes, for all their potential also highlight the problems with the combat system and you can never have enough power. The soldiers are difficult to command and you have little control over their priorities. While I understand that things should be challenging, they should still be accessible and not require loads of grinding.
Now for positives: Raids are absolutely a blast. They are challenging, rewarding and enhance delves into the lore. There are some class elements that are rather rewarding. Loremasters have a large amount of fun skills, which if you can decrypt this class, really show off the power of the class. Runekeepers are blast to play, pun intended and minstrels really feel like Heralds.
Community:
Before free to play was introduced, I absolutely loved the community and truly it is one of the best parts of this game. Random people are often quite helpful and there stands a wealth of guilds/kinships that players can join to suit their tastes and needs.

Great game, not really F2P. I HATE the questing markers. Need something like wow, rift, AOC...etc

While it is the best free game out there, LoTRO suffers from uninspired design and is heavily limited by the very source material it draws from. Give it a try.

I joined LOTRO when it went F2P. It's well made but I found that it doesn't offer much variety. It's mostly questing & raiding, pvp is an afterthought and crafting is pointless. Player housing leaves much to be desired and Turbine are consantly cheapening the feel of the game by sticking "buy it now" buttons all over the UI. Character customisation is also very basic. There are things I like about LOTRO but not enough to hold my attension that much anymore. My hunter is only level 30 after 8 months.

A WoW clone if I ever saw one. The most irritating feature was changing direction mid jump, which ruined kiting. I warn you all, the rating for this game is misleading. It is NOT better than World of Warcraft. Don't bother with it unless you're desperately poor.

Graphics are starting to age, however, some recent advancements with DX11 elements. The score is still fantastic and fits the world quite well. Haven't done much role playing myself, but the elements are all there. With F2P, you can't really beat the value, and can play for free for quite some time. Still having fun after nearly 4 years with LOTRO, 10 for the community, hands down, LOTRO has one of the best MMO communities out there. Perf/Lag, getting some glitching lately, and the new raid is starting to tax my aging system. CS: Wife's account hacked a while back, everything returned in 24hours. Perfect.
