Turbine and the Lord of the Rings Online team have announced that the annual, but newly overhauled, Yuletide Festival has kicked off. To celebrate the revamped event, the team has released a half dozen screens. Check them out in our Lord of the Rings Online screenshot gallery.

This month, Kate "Nereid" Paiz discusses a few of the reasons behind the changes implemented in the November update. In addition, Paiz reveals that Radiance armor will no longer be required for instances and will be removed from the game entirely with the January update.

Among other things, free players can now play the game all the way through Mirkwood on their way to level 65. There is also a new Yuletide celebration on hand that will go live in early December.

Called "Rise of Isengard", the new expansion will arrive in the fall of 2011. Rise of Isengard will feature a level cap increase, enhanced Monster Play, a new zone that includes the Tower of Orthanac.
Reported on Nov 19, 2010In a new developer blog regarding tasks in Lord of the Rings Online, Allan Maki revealed that the November update will include over 250 new quests falling in the 'free to play' category. These new quests come under the heading of 'tasks' and are repeatable quests that begin at level 8 in the Shire and Ered Luin and at level 14 in Breeland.

Included are improvements for the Farmer profession, new store items to make crafting more convenient and a brand new crafting panel. The diary goes into great detail about why the team chose to look at and overhaul the Rune-keeper class. Aloisio and team wanted to enhance underused skills, nerfed a few 'overpowered' skills, and to make pathways to power more interesting and varied.

In addition to the F2P announcement, Codemasters also revealed that Volume III, Book 2: The Ride of the Grey Company will be brought online and the LOTRO Store will be available from that time on.
Reported on Oct 29, 2010In the latest Lord of the Rings Online developer journal entry, Game Systems Engineer 'Ransroth' discusses the in-game vault system and improvements the Turbine team has been working on for implementation soon. The improvements are being implemented based on player feedback on the official LOTRO forums and include things such as resizeable windows, icon-only view and the main view being broken down into 'renameable' chests.

In the letter, Paiz reviews some of the information about subscriptions that was revealed during the Austin GDC. Paiz then continues on discussing Turbine's expanded view of LOTRO. Included in Paiz's remarks is information about a fundamental shift with regard to updates and how that will impact the game's development throughout 2011.

One of the more intriguing features of this year's festival is the Haunted Hobbit Cellar in Hobbiton. According to devs, the rumor is that Bilbo's treasure is contained within the cellar but no one seems to have the key... The game has scored over a million new accounts and doubled its monthly revenue. Additionally, peak concurrent player numbers have risen exponentially along with the return of a large number of former subscribers.
