We know for a fact from books, that smoking is far more of a hobby than fishing.

it would be nice, especially for those who like rp, to being able to sit down and smoke, learning to do more and more complex figures with smoke :)

Would Turbine catch grief from anti-smoking fanatics? Not the reasonable you should quit smoking folks, but the loons.

The ones that would use LotRO's smoking to grandstand thier own agenda.

I think you are confusing hobby with addiction.

To keep within the story, the use of a smoking pipe is important to LOTRO. Making it a skill based hobby is a bit much. I for one don't want my children thinking that the use of tobacco is a fun game to get better at.

i would like to see smoking become a hobby....i like the different shapes i get now with different brands of pipe weed :)

I have never smoked anything, nor do I plan to anytime in my future.

That being said....I LOVE YOUR IDEA.

Parents just need to talk to their kids about smoking beforehand, let them know the dangers and that it doesn't work the same in real life as it does in the game. In mmo's you walk around and shoot things or attack things with swords and clubs, but not in real life, because you can see the difference.

I saw the cartoon when I was a small kid and saw the smoke rings and thought it was cool, but never dreamed of me going out and doing the same thing. Plus, the pipes they use in the movie/book are a lot different than the ones in our society. That would also help keep kids to "smoking" in the game.

Meh, I think this is a bad idea. For one, it would force the ESRB to give the game an M rating just for this one hobby (which will hurt sales). Furthermore, who cares. What would adding a smoking hobby even add to the game (aside from scandal)? We don't need rank 5 stoners running around Middle Earth.

As someone else said. . smoking is not a hobby.  It is something someone might do while they are enjoying a hobby. . but when people have to leave work for 5 minutes to stand in the rain to smoke or they will "freak out" and not be able to function. . that is not a hobby.

Having said all that. . there are inns. . stand in them and smoke.

Also given the setting of Middle Earth it makes sense to fish since there are not super markets.  I bet a lot more people did fish in our "world" before there were so many stores.

Smoking until the pipeweed cloud is pouring out your ears is one feature that WoW doesn't have. Get yur pipes out for the masses!

 I'm a smoker but hate to say I agree with alot of the folks who say it would probably just present more headaches than it would be worth.  The zealots will come after the game for that focus and that is besides the fact that you can "smoke" and make cool liitle smoke figures already.

I'm all for them adding more variations of pipe weed as the systsem stands but I would hope for something better than just a small add on if and when they add another hobby.

And I don't think the issue of a parents influence is so simple to sum up as phrases like "if parents parent".  Thankfully I have no issues yet but I'd be lying if I said I haven't seen kids do some things against a good influences judgement.  It can tend to be that way I understand but it's not an absolute.

I challenge you to read my above reply and truly understand what I mean.

If you can drink and that doesn't make it M I don't see why smoking should. They are both dangerous and nasty habits.

Use of dangerous drugs is one thing of course but the characters of the books actually smokes. Even though I personally think an emote is enough.
