as a key for returning players to try their old account on a trial basis (without subbing) or am I limited to starting a new trial?

I'm just wondering if current players can send a "come back" key to former players - or anything like that.

No you have to start a new trial.
 

They do run come back weeks every now and then, last one was a couple of weeks ago.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Yeah, they usually run these during events or after a release of a new book.

Yes, the routinely open up for returning players, usually after a major content release.
