Long time WoW player who took a year off, went back, and enjoyed it, mainly because of a great guild of people mostly 40-60 in RL, upgraded my computer, moved on to the expansion, Burning Crusades, and have wondered what I'm doing. In other words, need a change. Because of what I've read about the community and the atmosphere more than any game specifics (I know very little) I think LOTR might be, could be, wonderful for me.

I enjoy soloing, really enjoy a good group of people to know and team up with on quests where needed, enjoy helping others. RP is probably higher on my list now than general.

I would very much enjoy traveling and journeying throughout the game, taking on quests and encounters as they come and relaxing down into the world.

I suppose I'm drawn between two possibilities of what I think the game contains. On the one hand, given the vagabond nature, I would love to begin as a wanna-be mage/wizard and to enjoy and eventually become good at magic, learning and leveling up in the knowledge. It's the character in my head that seems the most interesting to play.

I think I'm melee-playered-out after WoW, but I am drawn toward the entire Elf slant of things, the bows, the apparently decent skills that might require some melee moments.

I suppose I'm easily overwhelmed by a new game and a bit lost. I'd appreciate any reactions from you longtimers on the above as it might fit LOTR, along with suggestions as to where I might begin (server wise). Any referrals to people or guilds/groups is greatly appreciated.

Hope  I see you on the road.

Mojo

Hi Mojo...LOTRO sounds like a great game for you. Very casual and solo friendly. A Lore Master might be good for you or a Minstrel. Both have good magic, but a min would be easier for solo. Look me up if you are on a US server. Try Brandywine pretty populated so there will be a bunch of ppl to play with. Im in a great guild so if you jump on look me up. Char name is Tyndum.

Unfortunately there are no magic-using classes in LoTRO. However, there is some speculation that maybe magic will be toyed with in the new Moria classes coming this fall... you may want to wait til then.

The Lore Master is a magic user. Not like a damage dealing mage, but more like a crowd control/pet class.

I would also suggest a lore-master. They have a mix of ranged and melee skills, along with being a pet class. They're a good challenge to play. You also mentioned a bow, so my second recommendation would be a hunter. They're ranged dps, but also have a set of melee skills for when the mobs get too close. My third suggestion would be the minstrel. They're the healer class, with a unique take.

"It''s a simple matter of weight ratio, a 5 ounce swallow can''t carry a 1 pound coconut!"

I agree with those suggesting LoreMaster, but you have to understand it is not going to be your typical idea of what a magic wielder would be.  I know I was expecting some damage dealing machine when I rolled my trial character as a LM.  However I was disapointed with the class (because I in no way understood their roll in the game).  I rolled a Mini after the trial and love this class...you get melee, ranged attacks (though not via bow, but through music) and self heals.

For a server, even though I am on Brandywine and it is a great derver, if you like RPing definately check out the Landroval server as it is the "unofficial" RP server.
