I can say that FFXI is Square Enix's most profitable game and so it would make sense to make another MMO, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure that FFXIV won't be profitable at all, it's going to lose some money. Only because 1.0 was so expensive and then to make 2.0 which probably won't be super popular.

So FFXIV: ARR and FFXI. FFXI in today's shape is a lot different than the FFXI back before the major update to allow you to play with people of different levels and sorta the quest approach to leveling on FFXI. FFXIV has also changed as well. ARR and 1.0 are both super different and it's due to the fact that FFXIV 1.0 wasn't that popular. Leveling is much better and more group orientated.

I think that that's what Final Fantasy XI Online is all about. Grouping up and doing nothing by yourself and FFXIV: ARR does a better job this time around at getting you into a group. Whether it's public quests, dungeons or what not, it reminds me of those FFXI days all over again.

If they didn't think it would make money they wouldn't have re-done the game.  So yes I think it will make money.  People just have to give it a chance.  I think the only mmo coming out in the next year that will compete for the same players is wildstar at this point.  EQN is just well trying to change the market which not everyone wants.

The way I think of it:

FFXIV is to FFXI

as WoW is to EQ.

Lots of similar ideas and goals in place, yet a much more polished, modern, approachable...

Now Playing: D3:RoS
Looking Towards: Destiny

dont expect it to. Everyone and their grandmother have tried to make a casual friendly MMO that is up to the as the devs say "todays standards" have gone F2P in aabout a year tops and leaked subs and intrest like crazy.

i want it to be good, but its turned into something thats so much of the same as everything else out there, i cant see it lasting on just the name, pretty graphics and a solid story for very long.

This comment isn't biased at all.  I would hope a game that's been out 10 years would have more content than a game that hasn't even been out a day.  Not mention you couldn't have possibly even have tried most of the content in FFXIV yet.

Not saying you're wrong but well your expectations seem unreasonable.

Lol just no.  It's nice to publicly announce that you've never tried the beta before.  There is nothing copy and pasted from xi into this game.  They are very different and do things very differently.  I don't even want to bother going into detail on whats different because well you've already established that you've never played 14

I was an avid FFXI Player from North America Release Up till about a 1.5 years ago. I am also an FFXIV 1.0 Player as well as a 2.0 beta tester. I've yet to see where FFXIV: ARR is a Copy & Paste of XI but with better graphics. The games are quite different from each other. As for the content of course ARR will have barely 1% of the content XI has, XI has been out 12 years (Japan, 11 years for North America). I personally feel they took the wrong approach with Abyssea, that kinda ruined XI for me. Holy crap you can level from 1-99 in litterly a day of game play 2 max if you're not as hard core or have the time to devote. But anyway enough of that. XI was more about the group/co-op play vs. the soloist play like a lot of people these days like.

Again that all changed with abyssea and updates to the game mechanics with Fields of Valor and increasing the exp per kill solo on easy prey targets and decent challenge making it more solo friendly for all jobs and making it even easier for beastmasters and puppetmasters. Nothing was better than logging in, checking to see if your friends are on and saying Yo lets go start a party and level up a bit or lets go get infomation on this notorious monster and camp it for a while. Or even pulling out really odd job combos to show your skill. I still remember the day I went into ballista with my friend Ari (Red Mage/Ninja) Vs. My (White Mage/Ninja) and them him quitting the game because i 1 hit him with Hexa-Strike lol.... or proving that you're character could do more than what it was ment to do.

Now FFXIV: ARR I feel is a great game, if you actually remember back in 1.0 before release it had quite a nice hype but on release it flopped because the original director of it was taking it the approach of XI, Released with little content (big no no for the year it released) the UI was so laggy it just couldn't be played to its fullest. its Hype droped down a lot. I think it bottomed out at like 5.0 or 6.0 something like that. After all the rebuilding of the UI and a lot of mechanics and now 2.0 starting its final beta phase (hopefully this weekend lol). the player base has pushed it back up to 8.06 which i feel is pretty damn good from being a complete bomb on inital release back in 2010 ish and it really was a piece of poop for the 1.0 release.

The ones who complain about it that have been in beta i don't think are taking into consideration that it is still in beta and that by the end of phase 3 you were limited on what content you could test is driving their opinion of the game itself instead of trying to see the finished product. There are aspects of the game that i've come across that i'm not too thrilled about but when looking at everything so far as a whole, I thin the product is done quite well!

Onto the real question of the thread. Really trying to compare both games as to how one compares to the other just not really possible. They have intended them to be different (Story and such) Like all other Final Fantasys in the past with the expecption of  ##-2 which are continuations of the story. XI was more for the hardcore player that didn't mind spending an entire day just to have to wait for the next day or a week later to tackle some end game stuff. XIV is more suited to the casual player so you don't feel like you wasted an entire day and not accomplish anything.

Both are Great Games but honestly you're best off Trying it for yourself to get your own personal opinion on it than from a complete stranger. Not everything I like or what anyone else likes will guarantee that you like it. Get into the open beta when it starts test it out see if you can find some bugs that you can report if any at all and base your opinion on what you've been able to do in phase 4. If you like it great. any work you put into phase 4 you'll be able to keep for Retail release on the 27th so you don't have to back track and do it all over again. if not, no need to be bothered then and saved yourself 30 bucks or so on buying the game and eventually the game that will be right for you will come out soon enough :-)

P.S: Sorry for the wall of text =(

FFXIV is more streamlined / simplified than FFXI was. It's alot A LOT more soloable. Outside of dungeons you don't really hava to group up at all, unlike FFXI where the majority of the content in that game was not soloable. FFXIV does do a better job of getting you in a group, mostly due to the duty finder, but they also handle things like linkshells better in FFXIV imho.

As to whether or not FFXIV will do well.. it's hard to say. I think a lot of people will be playing it come release. It is the latest new shiny MMO and it looks amazing. However, most of the things people seem excited about aren't currently playable, so it will really depend on how well they're implemented. If the dungeons / raid content being promised is anywhere near as easy as the group content already in game. I can see a lot of people getting bored within a month or 2. However, if they do a good job with that, it could easily be a more longterm MMO for a lot of people.

As to whether it will turn a profit, we will likely never know. Rebooting this game was not cheap, and they've already taken a big loss with 1.0. Furthermore, trying to go full sub fee in the current market is a risk.
