I just pre-ordered this game with a bunch of friends of mine in the hopes of it being successful. I was curious about what the community's thoughts on this topic are. Do you think that FFXIV: ARR will be able to sustain itself? What are your concerns about the future of the game?

I hate seeing games with great potential fall soon after their release. Lets hope this MMORPG is not one of them!

Thanks for engaging in the discussion! See you in-game!

FFXI has and still is.

The way I see it:

WoW is to EQ as FFXIV is to FFXI.

It's a refinement, a gradual improvement, an evolution - not a revolution.

I think the game has some staying power because it's built on a philosophy of retaining players - not making a quick buck and having high turn over.

SE rebuilt this game as something it wants to last. If the didn't want to secure the long-term future of this game, they wouldn't have canned the first try and remade it from the ground up.

I've probably been lurking for way, way too long.

I think it's impossible to know for sure, but I think it will be a good long-term game.  After the disaster of XIV 1.0, the developers are in a must-win situation.  They are launching this version with more content than any other game I remember at launch - ie, 18 dungeons at launch.  That's a good start.

The ability to use skills from different classes means that you will have to level up multiple classes to be useful in the long run.  That will keep the feeling of accomplisment up.  Plus, nobody will rush to 50 and be "done."  Anyone that rushes to 50 without other classes leveled - thus skills available - probably won't be able to take down the elite bosses in the game.  You will have to be more versatile.

I think the crafting will end up very good.  FFXI did a great job of combining world drops with crafting things to make the best gear.  It doesn't seem like they are going that route exactly, but I think it's still going to be better than most crafting.

And there is a very dedicated Final Fantasy crowd out there that is just itching to play this game.  1.0 shows that they won't stick with a crappy game, but the critical mass is there if there continue to be lots of challenges.

Is it going to have the staying power from hardcore 1st-gens of FFXI, Ultima, Everquest, etc?  Probably not.  But that was the Golden Age and proably will never be repeated.

I think it's gonna sell just fine, seeing the overall positive feedback from the beta testers. It will never reach the subscribers WoW once had and I think it's gonna end being a niche game just like eq1 or ffxi are now but I am sure it's gonna last a long time just as his predecessor taking in consideration the huge fan base FF has.

I think it will settle on 500k subscribers.

That's enough to make a profit and keep it p2p for ever.  I plan on playing this game for years.  I really don't care what other mmo's are coming out.  I know for a fact, this game is for me.

I'm really excited to get into this game. From the looks of the community hype I think that this game will have a nice long standing in the MMO community. So far it seems that the FF XIV: ARR community is full of great people to play with. They all have a great attitude about this game and want to help it succeed.

My MMO background is a mixture of everything, but the longest standing game being WoW. It's hard to go to another MMO after playing WoW for 5 years. But now I think that this game will be able to replace that spot that WoW was in.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! I really appreciate it! Maybe I'll see some of you in-game!
