Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is launching this summer with a couple more Jobs than players expected, namely the Scholar and Summoner. Yet there are still many iconic Final Fantasy Jobs that will remain unrepresented in the game come launch. Today, we’re offering up a list of five Jobs we’d like to see in A Realm Reborn.
Ninja and Thief
A Realm Reborn is missing the “Thief” Class, so this would be needed first. Thieves and Ninjas are some of the most iconic roles in Final Fantasy history. Characters such as Locke Cole and Shadow from Final Fantasy VI are beloved by many fans of the series. These two roles also had great representation within Final Fantasy Tactics. Between Thief and Ninja, A Realm Reborn is sorely lacking that ‘Rogue’ trope for which many players are attached to. Backstabbing, stealing, and even throwing items would be great fun in ARR.
Also, who wouldn’t want to dual wield ninja swords or daggers? Come on!
Final Fantasy VI’s Cyan Garamonde would probably be the most well-known representation of the Samurai in Final Fantasy history, though I have to say I prefer Final Fantasy Tactics’ version as far as gameplay is concerned. The Samurai isn’t the most iconic FF Job, but between Cyan, Auron, FFXI, and FFT, it’s popular enough that fans of the series have been clamoring to see it appear in ARR. If the Job does make it to FFXIV, I would expect it to look similar to FFXI’s incarnation, though I hope Square Enix will somehow incorporate the Iaido gameplay from FFT into the class. Drawing out sword spirits for different effects was incredibly fun.
We’ve already got the Paladin in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, so why not also include its counterpart, the Dark Knight? Instead of leveling a Conjurer to 15, the Dark Knight would likely require 15 levels in Thaumaturge and incorporate an array of Black Magic and perhaps enemy debuffs and CC into its kit. Cecil played both, so why not? ;)
The Blue Mage has had fairly broad representation across the various Final Fantasy titles in some form or another. Blue Magic essentially focuses on learning abilities from monsters and using them against your enemies. Strago (FFVI), Quistis (FFVIII), Quina (FFIX) and Kimahri (FFX) all employed Blue Magic in one way or another. While Final Fantasy VII didn’t have a “Blue Mage”, Enemy Skill materia filled the same role. Of course, let’s not forget that FFXI also featured the Blue Mage. Despite their generic name, Blue Mages offer some of the most interesting, varied, and unique gameplay options.
This one is a super-niche pick, I would imagine. While Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn clearly leans towards a fantasy theme, there is clearly powerful technology present throughout the game (including Magitek armor!) and currently none of the available Jobs take advantage of this. Most incarnations of the ‘Engineer’ in the Final Fantasy series have been functionally different from each other, but what ties them all together is their employment of technology and gadgets to various effect. Turrets, guns, bombs and other technology would be a fun change of pace and would offer something for those Final Fantasy fans who prefer some of the more industrial or technology focused themes of the series.
