I think they're doing this in antisipation of an MMO announcement.

I spoke to Baldree when I was at PAX Prime in September and yes, there is a Torchlight MMO in the works.  Originally Torchlight II was supposed to be a MMO, but decided they wanted it to be a better Torchlight to give the fans a better game while they work on the MMO.

Surprisingly it looks kind of good for what it is. I don’t think it will have longevity however. Just something to pick up and play from time to time to take a break from whatever your primary game/mmo is. Does look like it would provide fun on a small lvl however.  It is definitely something to keep on eye on though.

They are doing Torchlight II first - it will be a multiplayer expanded version of Torchlight. Either after they finish with TL2 or while they are developing it they're doing the Torchlight MMO.

I bought Torchlight and it was one of the best $20 I've spent on a game. Within a week of releasing the content creation tools for the game, two users had worked out a multiplayer mod for it. I don't think they ever released it to the public, especially after it was announced that TL2 was coming, but it was pretty awesome that Runic released enough tools and information for them to do that.

I will be buying Torchlight 2 and torturing my coworkers until they buy it. Then I expect I'll buy the Torchlight MMO and play that too.

The Torchlight MMO is a separate game from the Torchlight ARPG that has already been released.

It will be a free-to-play + online shop MMO game set in the Torchlight world. This will be an MMO, and thus multiplayer. This is not a multiplayer mod to the Torchlight ARPG and you will not be able to carry over your current Torchlight character into the MMO version.

It's rather an OMG - Online Multiplayer Game, as far as I know. 

I might be wrong, though.

The F2P option for the MMO would worry me, except I'm really happy with what they've did on Torchlight. So instead of buying it, I'll just download it and play it. :-)

Torchlight II is the multi-player version of the current Single Player game. It is due to release sometime in 2011.

thats what an mmo is, it just means it can support lots of players, massively multiplayer online game.

I ended up buying Torchlight via Steam due to a few places calling it an multiplayer RPG and getting excellent reviews. After playing it, it is in fact a fun RPG, feels very reminiscent of Dungeon Siege to me but in no way, shape, or form could it be called a multiplayer game or an mmorpg. It definitely through me for a loop.

It's another game that payed a LOT of advertisement costs and got listed in the game list even though it makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE for it to be listed here, much like League of Legends did..

Actually, that's not what happened. Way back in 2009 (so long ago, I know) the Torchlight MMO was announced at the same time as Torchlight 1. That is when this site made the Torchlight section. Then after Torchlight 1 was so successful Perfect World gave Runic Games the go ahead to make a multiplayer Torchlight 2 before the MMO. In the meantime this site has been posting Torchlight 1 and 2 news on its own to build hype for the far-off MMO.

 

TLDR:

1- This section is for the Torchlight MMO

2- This site chose to post TL1 and TL2 news on its own

2- This section was made when Runic was still a poor indy developer, when they had no money for any kind of advertising.

I do believe that an actually MMORPG is planned for this IP.

 

TL2, is just a multi-player platform till the mmorpg comes out. 

 

God knows what thats going to actually be though.

 

I can say this though, I played Torchlight 1, and enjoyed it a great deal.   It's a Top-Down dungeon crawler,   there are a million of those out there.   But this one was fun, at least to me.

 

I'd love to see an MMORPG of this Title/IP.     I think it would be nice.  Although, if it's going to be F2P/Item mall, probably not.

F2P / Item Mall = "B" Rated MMO, with a Low Budget, looking for a sure fire way to get large returns on their product in a short time.   

 

F2P games usually have a Luster of about 6 months to them.  At least to me.

 

 

Half the F2P games out there are probably an actually classroom assignment of some student at ITT Tech.
