Games were generally of a higher quality when there were fewer of them and they could charge a subscription of circa $15 / month. Now the market is saturated with half-arsed crap, and here is the rub, whatever label the game has F2P, B2P etc, it invariably ends up costing more than $15/ month. (Wait for the 'you only spend what you choose to spend on a F2P' or 'you can choose not to play it' standard response). While I am on this subject, my train tickets cost a shit load more since the oligopolies were broken up and the railways fully privatised. I am moving to Russia.
