OP  10/15/12 11:01:31 AM#1

My fiance and I are currently playing GW2. We actually planned on going to MoP but some of recent changes with WoW has altered those plans.

I like GW2 but I really just want to play it as secondary game so I was thinking of giving Rift a try. I played at launch until I think patch 1.3 and know things have changed a whole lot (and expansion coming out).

What I am wondering about is this. We work different schedules, and our play time together is limited. I am wondering outside of just doing dungeons and raiding does Rift have much to offer in other departments for character advancement?

I enjoy aspects of games such as crafting, achievement collecting,  pet collecting, mount collecting, just making gold, etc etc. Things to do outside of combat I suppose you could say. Is there much of that in Rift? I like laid back activietes in MMORPGS. I guess I am getting old! Wait, no I am just old :)

Finally I am wondering what the community of Rift is like when say compared to WoW.

Rift does indeed have much more to offer than what you describe. Im open for critizism on this, but I feel that Trion really provides a great service when it comes to Rift. It is most likely the one company that pumps out the most content on a regular and somewhat fast phased basis. This alone makes it worth giving it a try as Rift has changed in many ways since release, simply because of the devs willingness to try new stuff out. They still have some to pick up on the PvP aspect, but theyve tried and there are many options, as well that I am sure theyre still going to continue.

Whats new in this coming expansion is new ways to level, so called "quest hubs" are also more spread out so it takes a little exploration getting to these and theyre often replaced with just 1 npc. Along the way theres Rifts to be done of each element in open world (also Rift quests which give diff Rifts, like PvP rift, raid rift, expert rift etc), many different variants of crafting (the two latest being survival and fishing), pets, mounts, artifacts (hidden fluff you find around the world, some even very rare that ends up in rewards when handing it in), puzzles to be found and solved, chronicles (which is a 1-2 man dungeon), conquest (3 faction PvP with objectives), instant adventure (a system that gather people for content in open world), and zone invasions. I problably missed some, but all these things gives achievement points. Even if you're not into world pvp I'd suggest joining a PvP server for a richer MMO experience, the trill and "risk", since a balance between pve/pvp is in my opinion critical.

Also at 50 theres further character progression, which is also account bound, called planar attunement. It's based on 7 different directions you spend experience points in, like one being a PvP tree. And if you ever go past in levels and your other is left behind, you can always use the Mentor system that downlevels you so that you can still quest with her.

Basically the thing about Rift is all the small fluff put together as a whole, giving you a rich experience if you just know how to appreciate it. Like being able to dye your gear, to be in the same guild cross faction, barbershop, the fact that zones in the world doesnt have loading screen when mounting across the world, dynamic weather, dimensions (where you can build your own house / your guild can.. heck you can even build a boat).

You get the idea..

Edit: Also about the community, Rift has a more mature approach when it comes to their character models, which you could say reflects the community on the forum. If you're polite and friendly people will help you out, if you're a whiner then expect to get treated as one.

I'd also like to add the wardrobe feature where you can appear differently than what you're actually wearing and that you can get married^^ Pluss not to forget the vast soul system where you can play around with multiple souls within a class for somewhat unique gameplay.

The enire soul system is gonna change in a week or two so you may wanna hold off for that or it may be really confusing for you with so many changes in such a short period of time.

A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still

There are a lot of ways to play rift. Most of which has a progression and reward system in place. Off the top of my head:

Dungeons
Raids
World events
Zone invasions
Planar attunement
Warfronts
Mentoring
Wedding ceremony
Conquest
Instant adventures
Outdoor puzzles
Crafting
Tons of rift types
Chronicles
Dye system and wardrobe
Cooking and fishing
Barber shop
Ember island invasions
Artifact collecting
Collecting vanity clothing, effects, titles pets and mounts

Storm legion brings more of everything above plus:

New souls and added tiers to old souls
Explorable land mass is tripling in size
Roaming world boss that destroys structures and villages
Hunt rifts system
Kill streak and exploration quest styles
Player and guild housing

I dunno, its hard to imagine this game has only been out a year n a half and has so many features. It is worth a sub just for the satisfaction of seeing your money go back into the game. But thats just me. Lots of people play mmos for different reasons. Rift has a lot of options, but if none appeal to you then it will never work.

If you thought the events were dynamic, you'll think the stories are living.

It's a combination of Nightingale Armor with the Mod Truebound Deadric Armors

I built up 2 raid level geared characters without actually raiding.

Dungeons, Instant Adventures, Onslaughts, Zone Invasions, Crafting, Daily Rift Raids,  Chronicles, World Events. To name a few. My favorite and the thing that keeps me subbed are the open World PVE raids. They are always fun and you usually don't have to wait long before one kicks off.

That said, there is a lot of criticism surrounding this game. rift is a decent game, but it's not perfect. A lot of the criticism is valid. But a lot of it isn't. When people say "When I was in beta........"  or some other early complaint, I usually take with a grain of salt sine the game has changed so much. in a short period of time.

I feel that the state of the genre is such that a total and complete failure is needed so it can be reborn anew.
I'm actually hoping this new generation of 8 button MMOs will make that happen.

Is the mercenary system still not optional when you join a warfront ?

Thanks for answering, too bad they don´t give players an option and until they do that I will find some other mmos to enjoy.

Well if that function is really important to you the closest thing you can get is the conquest, where you can chose between 3 factions. Other than that, dont have your hopes up that other MMOs within the same category will offer the same options, at least for the next 1 - 2 years. Personally I'll get this in Darkfall, but thats another gametype and discussion.

I mean when I choose a faction I want that to count in game and not have to fight on same side as your enemies in pvp, even if it is just a warfront. You are right, sadly I will probably have to wait for the elder scrolls online for faction vs faction pvp and hope they will improve on War pvp (which was fun in the beginning but also had some big problems, like only 2 factions )
