The game has had micro transactions since day 1. As far as I know its the first MMO to ever allow digital upgrades to a collectors edition. And then they added a second collectors edition. And then another mount after that. Currently there are 3 mounts you can buy that arent obtainable in game and dont come with the base game. I dont see the big deal over cosmetic micro transactions though, its not like Trion doesnt reinvest the money into the game.

All P2P games will have cash shops sooner or later. I don't see P2P model to survive for a long time considering enourmous number of available F2P good games on the market. Get used to it, otherwise you can give up on gaming whatsoever.

Awesome... I really can't stand cash shops in subsription games. I pay my monthly sub to have access to ALL content generated by the dev team. That includes vanity items, pets, mounts, etc..
I commended Trion for sticking to a sub only path and not throwing all the cool new things they developed into a cash shop, since I can afford my sub and not really afford throwing money away for what I expect to be in game. Especially when most of the items in cash shops equal up to the same amount as a monthly sub.
I know it's all about money for companies, otherwise they wouldn't bother to exist. But as a consumer it really turns me off. So good luck Trion, I won't be returning with Storm Legion like I had planned now after seeing this.

I guess I'm just set in my ways of how mmo's were back during EQ1, DAoC, Nexustk. It really bugs me though, I know a lot of people don't care because they either A) have the money to burn or B) don't buy anything from the store.
It's just the principle of it that I can't look past. Playing: LoL / SWTOR |

Originally posted by Aerowyn That's what I thought my subscription was paying for. At first I thought it was no big deal if they sold CE upgrades. It was when they started adding new digital content that I realized they too weren't happy with a "subscription as a service" model that they touted. They wanted more and the sub model they espoused wasn't viable without support from additional sales. My first year in RIFT I spent the CE digital price plus $13/mo in 3 month stints. My second year I bought the next $10 upgrade and a year sub for $99. That is a little over $300 for 2 years. With GW2 I buy the game for $60 and have unlimited access. I can spend another $40 on it in a years time and have spent the same amount as my 1 year RIFT sub, but I will get to keep on playing indefinitely. In no way will I have had to spend $200 for the first year like I did in RIFT. I can spend $50+ on my F2P games, get some good stuff and keep playing indefinitely. As soon as my sub lapses in RIFT I lose access and what money I have invested in the game. No matter what way I look at it the sub model doesn't seem to be a good deal overall. Not only that if the commitment to a recurring fee isn't viable, then why buy into that system at all? I like the F2P model the most because it lets me choose when and how to spend and their game has to be worth it. B2P is less desirable to me because it is riskier, but at least I don't lose access and my time and monetary investment. I don't think the sub model just doesn't work out as well anymore. |

Yeah i saw that shopping cart icon pop up last week. If/when trion starts selling f2p type items in there, im out. Themepark is not a sub genre, its an excuse. |

Originally posted by Arkain For the record, I agree with you. The reskinning thing is petty. So is the whole anti-cosmetic cash shop argument. I support cash shops that go towards game development gor games that don't have enormous sub revenue (EQ2 and Rift good, WoW bad). |

This. That said, The day Rift puts stuff in the shop for my toons that I can't get in the game, will be the day that Trion will never see a dime from me. If the conversation turned "Tit-for-Tat", and I've stopped posting, Consider it your win. |

We aren't talking about what's in there now. We are talking about what might be in there come 11/13 and/or beyond. Today it's services, next expansion, maybe it will be Sunglasses and boxing gloves. After that who knows? Is it all doom and gloom? No, Not yet. They haven't done anything game breaking yet. But, they changed their EULA for Rift you know. It included micro transactions. They carefully worded it around the need for it as it applied to EoN but I still needed to agree to it for Rift. They are going to a lot of lengths to offer expansions, game time and name changes through a UI. You can say it's only services now,and you are correct. But not not raise an eyebrow over future intent is just setting yourself up to get smacked. Even if they never do it, you should still be paying attention. Go up to the top of this page. Take a look at the payment model. It says hybrid. I am betting that's because of the new EULA. Like I said, I enjoy this game, but I'm prepared to drop it faster than a gown on wedding night if they put anything in there I don't like. Originally posted by Dranny So do you honestly think they added a complete in game store just to sell those three items? And if so, then why would you think that? They didn't even really add subscriptions in. They added the ability to buy blocks of non-subscription time. You can't purchase recurring time slots. One still needs to go to the website to implement a recurring fee. |

you would really prefer b or c to a? |

I do have a problem with the white tiger. But even WoW sells mount skins. I hate that too.
