^^ How does this make any sense? You would have to pay the sub fee regardless and even that is discounted here...

So month by month sub payment would be ~179.88 for a year and the expansion would be 60 for a grand total of 239.88. So the discount on the year sub and the expansion save you ~120 dollars.

Bad deal is bad right?

Is that how you really view it?  Really?

Here is something posted BY Trion for 2012: 'The new plans are actually rather competitive, asking a mere $99 USD for a entire year's worth of Telara madness."..  This is one fact brought up by the one poster.. He is now being asked to pay 120 a year instead of his current "99" a year.. So how is the expansion free?  It looks like he's paying 20 bucks for the expansion this year, and then paying MORE for the sub each year after..  This is a deal? or just sugar coating a price increase?

You make quite a poor argument. The $99 a year only applies to the people who are locked in with the founders price or there was a period of time where they lowered pricing a bit. You realize the amount of people that get annual subs are the minority right?

Why on earth would a company keep lowered prices right before they are going to get an influx of players due to the expansion? That would be awful business.  They went back to their original pricing, which is on par with the rest of the MMO with subscription market.

Personally, myself and the ~20 people from my guild that are going into this with no sub to RIFT will be saving $120 bucks.....so yep. That is exactly how I look at it.

Definitely a smart move for Trion.  Its kind of funny that we dont even know a release date or a price for the expansion, we do know it will be cheaper for those who already bought Rift (Id bet $50 for the expansion/vanilla package and $30 for those who already have Rift).

But there are going to be a lot of people with a sub much longer than they will be paying for.  A year is such a long commitment, especially when a game like Rift when the people that stay subbed for a year at a time are few and far between.  I also bet they are getting a few people to resub early because, even if they will be spending the next 3-4 months before SL release in Tyria or Pandaria before coming back for SL

WoW was also more flexible, allowing one month/3 month/6 month subs to be included in the deal for those who couldnt afford the one time fee.  I am pretty sure it also counted sub time already paid for for those on multi month subs, which trion does not.

I am honestly surprised Blizzard did not offer this, after they did so with D3.  I think they would garner alot more returning players if they did.  The announcement that anyone can play the races I do not feel is enough to lure a large amount of former players back.  Another thing that shocks me is that they do not include all the previous expansions and base game with the expansion for new players.  I know they usually discount the base game and former expansions near/after launch of a new expansion, but expecting a new player to pay for all of that is just to much imo nowadays.

Cheers!

i checked - you are correct

but getting a free copy of a different game isnt the same as getting a free expansion for the mmo you are playing

I agree.  I would imagine a large portion of WoW's players were going to get D3 anyway, and D3 costs more than SL, but Trion is offering something everyone will want.

WoW also gave people MoP Beta, Im wondering if Trion does the same. I would assume so, they need as many testers as they can get because the exansion cant afford to be anything but amazing (and they havent put out anything close to amazing since Ember Isle)

I admit it. I paid $120 for the girl in the skimpy armor.

How could one play Rift for a year anyway?

Bookworm Deluxe has more going for it and it's only good for a month or two.

I respect Trion as a company they have been really fast at putting out great content better then any of the sub only games out there, however, this kind of thing is a warning sign. People don't realize that the reasons for them doing this is a bad possible future. Unless they can change their game significantly enough to keep players from moving on to other titles with new features this is a sign they may be estimating losing players. I'm not some naysayer hater, I actually care about their success more then the rest of the sub companies because of how honest they are with their playerbase and how they keep in constant contact with their players, but I can't ignore the warning signs.

Looks like a decent deal but the game is just not for me. I played the free trial and logged out after a while (no idea how long as I don't time such things) and could not bring myself to log in again. After hearing how great the game and graphics were I was disappointed with the whole starter area enough to never ever revisit again.

They seem to be one of the more benevolent companies - and attempt to put out a good product, or quality content in various sizes but the game isn't interesting or fun in the least.

It's little issues (Lack of deep polish) make it unplayable since it has no real big positive quality to fall back on. (I.e Good story telling, developed lore not written by a quido with a huge ego and inflated sense of self worth), wonderful PVP or character progression

(Think WOW - total trite EAVision shit content wise, but lots of polish and runs well so it's tolerable to play.)
