aside from the character progression system and pvp stuff that i don't care (and hence don't remember) about, i don't think they've announced any thus far.
they have said that it's pretty much a full-fledged themepark. "I’d rather work on something with great potential than on fulfilling a promise of mediocrity." |

The pvp isn't sandbox its more "rvrish"
The devs describe it as a themepark where you can take any ride. I guess they are going back to older themeparks like their own anarchy online that were more open than the modern wow clone style themepark |

There are none. You will NEVER see a AAA sandbox title. Only about 20 MMO players actually like playing them |

Originally posted by ShakyMo AO had some sandbox elements with character progression as well both PvE and PvP city building. Large reason i was disappointed in AoC was because they dropped the PvE sieges from the design (Although they kept pvp). I don't think TSW has either, but i heard there is some other PvP land control stuff. "I’d rather work on something with great potential than on fulfilling a promise of mediocrity." |

According to Xfire (again, obviously not an accurate polling so i'll try to give it a modifier to "guess" actual numbers) SWTOR had roughly around 9,827 this Friday online at one time. Now, again, since Xfire isn't a 90%+ accurate polling system I'll give them a GENEROUS modifier of 3x giving them 29,481 concurrent players online around roughly the same time. Yet, supposedly EvE ONLY has around 250,000 subscribers, and SWTOR somehow has around 1.1million?
It's FAIRLY obvious that BOTH Sandbox AND Themepark have the needed "interest". However, the AAA Themepark market is so saturated with WoW-clones that new Themeparks simply cannot compete anymore without heavy hitting companies behind them spending HUNDREDS of millions on their development, OR without going the growingly popular "PayToWin" model. Note, I say "growingly popular" in regards to the COMPANY aspect rather than the CUSTOMER aspect.
Meanwhile the "Sandbox" market is only taken up by sub-funded "indie" companies that barely have the money to scrape up enough parts for a single server let alone development of more than 3 devs. If the situation was reversed it'd be obvious why Themeparks would be failing, and yet people constantly claim that there "is no market for Sandboxes" when we know that is completely false. |

Originally posted by Fadedbomb Wait... So you assume 1 in 3 MMO players playing TOR use Xfire? That's pretty bold, considering how few people actually use it regularly these days with Steam and other services providing similar service while also being useful in other areas.
Sandbox market is not mainstream market. And with how much money it takes to even do a "clone themepark" MMO no shareholders will greenlight a AAA sandbox one these days. Sure EVE reaches the 54k concurrent players, or rather ~30-40k unique tops with lot of players playing on 2-3 accounts, but it's pretty much aunique gem that has a very dedicated following. While it's a great game for what it is, it will never really reach the numbers of comercial, AAA, mainstream themepark clones. It requires too much of time investement form a player, and most of market is made of more casual gamers.
As for TSW, it's still more driven MMO. The psuedo-sandbox feeling might come form the fact that lack of levels allows You to go where You please at any given time, and while You might not be as usefull as someone who unlocked more skills/has better equipement, You can still, in theory, contribute if You know what You are doing. There is no "player generated" content however which for me is the whole idea of sandbox environment. Open world/Open ended is not exaclty the same as sandbox. |
