I know Dayz is just a mod but i jumped in last night in the pitch black and i felt waaaaay more on edge than i did in TSW. I love TSW and have pre-ordered but cant help think if they used some of the creepy music along with the darker setting it may have grabbed more peoples attention. I do think this will great game dont get me wrong but i also like to feel a hardmode as such and feel that a wrong move could be fatal.

Struggling to get across what im meaning and understand that both are completely different in terms of one being a fps sim the other a theme park mmo but there is a similiarity with setting and its the way it makes you feel when playing that is different.,....??????

DayZ is a permadeath game. Also, you have to carefully manage your supllies, ammo, etc, you have to be extremely carefull with evrything you do. This doesn't happen in TSW.

Also, TSW is not a horror game. Just because it has zombies and other monsters, is dark themed, does not mean it's a horror mmorpg. Funcom never said it was. There are moments that creep and freak you out, and sometime there could be areas, story parts, etc that could be down right scary, but that's also a small part. Anyone trying to play this game for that type of experience is in the wrong game.

DayZ is the perfect zombie survival game. We really haven't seen anything like it before. Project Zomboid is a zombie survival game but it's not really the same thing.

Other zombie games (left4dead, resident evil, dead island, that other one that I hate and can't remember the name of) are not survival games. They are just action zombie games.

TSW is definitely not a zombie survival game. It's not even entirely a zombie game for that matter. There is so much other stuff going on.

That's where I see the big difference. DayZ is zombie survival. TSW is not a zombie mmo, but an mmo with zombies everywhere.

I also think that it's not unfair to compare DayZ to MMOs. It has a ton of mmo features going on. It may not be an mmo but it's very close.

Because TSW is NOT similar to the setting.
TSW is NOT about zombies and survival in a what if scenario.

TSW makes you an anima powered superhuman in a setting where you can smell the brimstone, kiss 3000 old agypt woman and hunt yetis on high mountans. While walking the spirit world / hollow earth.

If i would drop my TSW character into DayZ, i would pick up two tree branches and hurl fireballs and lightning around me while stopping bullets with my hands + while draining enemy soldiers of their life energy to heal myself.

Comparing TSW to DayZ is like going to the DayZ creators and asking why can't i jump 20 kilometers long and drop nuclear weapons left and right, because that crazy anime game where they do such stuff had zombies too.

I mean it's not bad wanting a survival "permadeath" mmo where you need to be tight with resources because your guns need ammo despite having those flashy "skills". But TSw is far too much "themepark" for that.

I prefer night to be dark in any game I play. I do think TSW could lower the lighting at night for more atmosphere/realism but if it doesnt I have the brightness and contrast to make it how I think it should be.

Dayz on the other hand...after playing Stalker with lurk or smp mods running I can see just how far this mod needs to go before it even starts to impress me. The only thing it does better is multiplayer and thats a big thing, and it is proven fun, its just so far behind in all other aspects. If only someone could combine the two Id be lost for years :D

its a pointless comparison

its like comparing GW2 to Soul Calibur as they both have big swords and lots of sparkle effects.

The only way to really scare players is to punish them if they fail.  Combine that with horror-movie-escue visuals and music, and you will have real fear in a video game medium.  TSW won't scare anyone because if you die, nothing really changes.

that's a silly argument.. so no horror movie has ever scared anyone because it doesn't actually kill them? I have played several very freaky games in my life that had little to no death penalty

I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. Can we just stop talking about DayZ maybe, especially in regards to MMOs?

DayZ might be interesting, yes. It's a good mod for ArmA2 I'll give you that, but it's nothing else then a shooter with permadeath. There's nothing that qualifies DayZ as a MMORPG, no character-progression, no craftig, no economy, no nothing.

@Yalexy

My understanding is that there is character progression, crafting, and a potential barter economy.

There is persistence as well, which makes it very close to an mmo in my opinion. Sure it's not a true mmo, but it's got a lot of the stuff going for it that an mmo has.

I think this is a further example of the blurring of the lines between MMOs an non MMOs.

I dont understand this rising trend of people wanting one game to be like another. Just play a game for what it is. If you want it to be like another game, just play that other game. Its like nobody even plays games anymore, they just have some wishlist of a mashup of all these other game features into their dream that will never happen.

I never played Super Mario Bros and said "Man I wish this played like Sonic". Id just go play Sonic if I felt the urge. Now everybody wants their mmos to have DayZ setting and GW2 combat lol.

I can see wanting game features that are no longer available, like SWG's crafting for example. But we are talking about games that arent even out yet, wanting to change them into another existing game before it even launches lol. And we're talking about MMOs at that. These things change constantly. Let them do their own things. Play what you like.

and what if you played all you like and are wanting something new? if you can lead me to a good recent sci-fi MMO i'd love to play that. If you could lead me to a eastern style MMO with fun questing i'd love to play that. Obviously many people never get everything they want but we like to discuss these things in the "GENERAL discussion forums"  i really don't see why this stuff bothers people if you don't like people talking about this stuff simply don't read the post not really that hard of a concept.

If you want to play something new, then go find something new and play it. If you can't find something you like to play, then either you're not looking hard enough, or its time to find a new hobby. Im all for game discussion, but most of this is just whining about games not being whats been built up in someones mind. Thats not game discussion, thats called throwing a tantrum over unrealistic expectations.

Go ahead and make a cool "what if" thread. You wont get 5 replies in before people start bashing actual games because of some dreamed up perfect mmo. Its sad.

no that's called mmorpg forums... you been around long enough to know that... honestly though half the threads on this site are this type or troll/flame threads.. I prefer these threads of the latter any day.

Meh, I think the game is mostly fine. But I can't help but think that I would have gone for a significantly darker tone personally. I'm not saying make it a horror game, but the impression I've gotten from marketing material is much more dark and about the horror of uncovering the existence of magic, demons and secret societies holding power.

Just my thoughts.

You let me know when an actual discussion occurs. Until then, I'll wade through opinion posts as usual around here ;)
