They actually give you a chance to play for free with distributed keys instead of having to pay to play beta to see if you like it. :)

This game is being released in 5 weeks compared to, say, another game that doesn't have a release date.

The lid has been kept incredibly tight on the ongoing beta tests, so a lot of people have no idea how the game actually plays. I have seen remarkably little gameplay content despite being interested in this product.

Perhaps said other game, when it has a release date set, will offer an open BWE?

:)

Still they're giving free chances to play on the very first beta weekend instead of goading people into buying it for a chance at beta.

They are offering players who don't want to wait for a random invite a chance to see the game ahead of time as a bonus for prepurchasing.

Trying to spin that into a negative is hilarious, especially when you are using FunCom as a basis for comparison.

The other game did this also. Though no one on this site can say how many of the beta signups were used of course. They can guess, but that's all it would be. :P

You can also get into TSW beta's by way of putting down money.

yea pre-ordering gave access to beta for TSW as well BUT you didn't need to pre-purchase so amazon.com and such orders got you in

GW2 also had a beta sign up.

You could wait to beta it later during release.

If anyone bought it just to "test it out" with no refunds. . they are crazy.  it was a chance for fans who know they want it to buy now and get a bonus.

You are not paying for the beta . . you are buying the game and getting some beta events as a bonus.   It would be like buying tickets ahead of time to a movie you like and getting to watch some previews they send you as a download. . you aren't paying all that money for those previews.

Remains to be seen. I thought they said these beta weekends will always have a criteria of entry though, or something along those lines.

@OP I can't really see what allowing one area of game-play will really accomplish to that effect. I'll give it a whirl but I doubt it will push my opinion in any direction as there's so much I won't see.

Sorry, but signing up for a game's closed beta with a snowball's chance in hell at getting picked doesn't compare to visiting a site and picking up a free key. And every game has closed beta signups.

Any way you slice it, offering free keys is a much better way for an audience.

Except the free key didn't work for me.  It allowed me set up an account then took me a pre-order for access page.  Oh, well, maybe next time.

I guess GW2 just didn't need to do this?  I certainly appreciated it with TERA and considered buying that game (and I had not before then).  They did stop giving out keys for prepurchse because they were (full).

I am going to try TSW and will likely enjoy it.  I do wonder if they are doing it to try to grab some attention away for GW2 and get some people (like myself) to consider buying it instead.  It is marketing and I guess GW2 just didn't nee that.  Will it cost them?  Maybe.

This.  TSW really does intrigue me and would prolly really enjoy it but paying for a retail plus a $15 dollar sub fee when there is GW2 plus Neverwinter at the end of the year to include time limitation on gaming I find it really hard to get persuaded to spend all that cash for TSW.

Ive played both and GW2 is in many ways is a more unique game overall when compared to what's out.. saying that as of now I plan on playing both games just waiting to see how TSW pvp fleshes out since the PVE game is fun enough for me to sub to it for a little while.

I really don't like paying sub fees either but if a game is good enough, I wil. Just tired of elves and orcs and their equivalents.

I wont buy if i cant try it (my general policy these days) and when the game is made by funcom and published by EA that goes double..

So I am glad fudgecom decided to take this route and am looking forward to getting hands on in this game and hopefully we will help stomp out a bug or two in the process..

While i rag on fudgecom a lot its not so much about their games in general which are usually somewhat fun as much as it is about the managing of their games, it is always an unknown concern with any new game but when considering a funcom product it looms even bigger..

Playing GW2..
