You used the wrong word there,  I have not seen any hate at all in the threads on Darkfall, just a lot of healthy skepticism.  Which is more than warranted due to the high levels of secrecy maintained by the development staff.

We will just have to wait and see what January brings us.

I think Aventurine went about teh right way on this, by invoking this veil of  'secrecy' and by not hyping it up so uch, He has given us sneak peeks at the game, and allowed the community to draw their own conclusions.

As we have seen from AoC and WAR launch is the hype was too much for the game to live upto, everyone had such high expectations, the Beta testing resulted in such negatory comments about the game and (in teh case of AoC) failed to live up to its promises.

By simply outlining what the game will include and enforcing such a strict NDA to the current testers the mystique of the game is maintained.

This game (and indeed Aventurine) have the potential to change the way games are 'exposed' prior to launch, this game will find itself in the same market as EvE, a PvP FFA that appeals to a broad base of players, for many this will be the first time they play something that doesnt involve powerlevling to max level and then constant raiding.

I personally am awaiting the next 6 weeks with baited breath, My cupboards will be stocked with food and snacks, my phone will be off the hook and my TV disconnected and Darkfall installed and ready to go (hopefully!!) on 22nd January

I have high hopes for this game.  The main problem I've experianced, and it's probably universal, is the general unfinished buggy state that MMO's are getting released in.  I'll pay much attention to this one, but will probally wait a month or 3 before trying it out - unless they go forward with a 14 day trial at lunch.

You're absolutely correct.

This is not to say that I disagree with keeping secrecy because quite frankly, after seeing how players are and seeing all the nda breaking, if I had a game company I wouldn't let any info out until I was actually done with the game or ready for beta (knowing full well people will lead).

I think it's too hard for game companies to deal with players. If they want to cut something, even right before beta they should have the right to do it. If they want to change it they should as well. I wonder how many products we have bought where the design was change many times because the initial plans just didn't work. Seems that games have a hard time with this.

This announcement is good because it shows people that a small game company can strike out and make a game their own way.

However, in some ways it's bad because, as you pointed out, there is already a lot of hype. There are people who really do believe, without actually trying the game or a large consensus giving opinions, that this game is going to be the most amazing thing ever.

Well... it "might" be. I hope so for all the people who play. However I think they should mitigate their expectations because you know you are going to see things like "hey, there are fed ex quests" and "hey, there are areas that don't seem finished" and many more possibilites.

Just take the game at it's face value, is what I say.

By allowing the community to draw their own conclusions, you are opening the door for hype and thus disappointment.

That is still better than showing tons of gameplay advertisments which decieve. This way if  their game is genuinly as good as they promiss or to the extent most are hoping for, then the game will have a great last. Hype by word is much better than by image because of all the extra speculation, but of course it is risky if you dont have a good game to present at the end of the day, that goes with just about hmmm every game that gets hype in existance.....

The only thing that could hurt darkfall right now is if it launched broken and crappy/bugged. Which if that happens it deserves to fail, but you should only truly beleive it wil be that terrible if you are a complete naysayer of everything that is DF. I for one beleive to the extent that when tasos goes over and over saying this game is more polished than most games at the same point, it is likely true, especially with the small reviews that have been made.

But I would never call you a naysayer Arcken, we all know you luvy wuvy DF

While I have been following the progress of this game for some time I doubt that I will be playing it any time soon. The problem...the EU servers. You see, I am one of those "Americans" that won't have a server at launch. While I have heard many statements saying "lag should not be a problem" I simply will not believe it until I see if for myself. To that end, I will not be playing Darkfall unless they offer a free trial. If they do, I will try it and determine for myself if the EU server location is does in fact cause play problems. If Darkfall does provide a free trial period (which I believe they have promised) then I will be there.

Good luck to you folks in the EU. Hope the game is as good as promised.

Nice, this is good news for the Darkfall followers. Only thing that bothers me is the way the give out information. Instead of posting a thread or making a news topic about thier recent promises and not living up to them and then adding this news ontop of it, they just moved onto this news. Not that it really matters, it just seems like the easy way out. And this is something they have done quite often. Not to say other companies don't do this, but with tasos being so defensive, I would of expected more from him on the subject. Oh well, gl Darkfall, and hopefully this is your last pushback. See ya in game sooooooooooon .....

No one forgot.  It was their FIRST promise they sort of broke by 22 days.

But guess what?

We are all too mature to care!!!!

Big milestone and the ACTUAL gamers are excited that a game from an indie has the chance to break the mold and bring some new life to the genre.  We will see if they succeed on the 22nd of January.

Until then lighten up and just own up, because you were definitely one of the people spewing vaporware all over the forums.

By downloading the game and installing it and playing. You'll just be connecting to EU servers instead of a local one.

GL DF fans. I thought I might try it out but I'm not too keen playing a FFA PvP MMO on higher pings that I get from servers from the east and west coast. Those extra ms are a no go for me.

You don't know that. If it were that simple the NA release wouldn't be separate from the EU release. From what I have heard, they are interested in letting people "play the game before they buy it." Perhaps there will be some kind of trial for the NA audience while the EU servers launch. This statement however, implies more than simply importing the game and connecting to the EU servers because they would not have to make that statement if that was the case.

Darkfall is already trade-marked in North America until they change that there won't be a release for NA any time quick.

I'm not sure everyone saw this part, so I thought I would quote it. I'm not sure exactly what the hell that means, but it's worth noting.

means they probly wont have usa launch at first

To that end, I will not be playing Darkfall unless they offer a free trial. If they do, I will try it and determine for myself if the EU server location is does in fact cause play problems. If Darkfall does provide a free trial period (which I believe they have promised) then I will be there.

Good luck to you folks in the EU. Hope the game is as good as promised.

I would still have to see what it is like for ME and I am not putting money on the table for an unknown like that. Yes, I have a good internet connection but there are other things that can affect ping to international sources that this one speedtest.net thing does not address. Therefore, my opinion is unchanged.

Than keep digging your head in the sand vaportroll...the game WILL launch weather your eyes are (basically) open or shut. We are talking about an indie game here, not a game being developed by a multinational company that has overflowing funds.

Have you considered that if Adventurine were to launch everywhere at once it could stretch their resources too thin? They are a smaller game company, therefore the best course of action is to take one step at a time. Biting off more than they could chew would do more harm than good.

Launching the game first in EU makes perfect logistical sense, sense they ARE in EU...duh.

The reason I don't play Korean grinders has nothing to with geography, but rather a design philosophy they seem to to mostly share. If a good game came out of Korea from a reputable company, I wouldnt care where it was from. I don't get your isolantionist mentality at all.

Any NA player that won't play an non-American game based solely on geography is... Well, lets just say that I feel sorry for them. Your attitude dosent represent your country at all well.

I am in the UK and played EQ on US servers in '99, on a P266 and a 56k dial up modem. On a PvP server. If I could then, you can definitly now. Get over it.

As others have said, this is an indie company, with limited resource, so back off and give them a break.

Lets give this game a chance to impress us (or not) before we look for every chance to slate it.

Jan 22? Sounds good enough for me, I been a bit sceptical to the december launch the last few weeks, we should have heard about it earlier then.

This is not the game I really look forward too but it will be intresting to see it.

As far as I remember did Wow release in NA first, big companies do this too sometimes, that is neither a good or a bad sign. It also gives them some time to fix the buggs that are bound to show up, with Wow was the 3 months later EU version a lot more stable.

I am not saying DF is a good or bad game, I have no clue about that but launching everywhere at the same time is actually not that common. Some games like AoC had only a few days between but other had 3 months like Wow.

And since they are European it seems logical to release in EU first. It doesn't prove anything about DF whatsoever, one way or another.

Some time after? Noticed it didn't say soon after. Maybe it will be out intime for the 2009 Christmas season.

You completely screwed that one up m8.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."

Let me be the first to let you know.

We (U.S.) lost that war. Which they knew 5 years later when AN was being filmed.

You might want to invoke a different quote next time.

Victory, dont you think thats a bit premature? If I were you, Id save my victory dance for release. That way you can tell if the game is actually all thats been promised.

Gloating is the sign of a small man.

Plus, gloating on a release date scheduled a month after their prior "release" date seems a small bit to start dancing upon.

It means PING/PING/PING/PING/PONG.

Dead.

I trust the US servers will be up soon after. In SWG, I never played on a local (US) server, but at the same time vever felt as though I suffered as a result. This includes JTL, which was twitch (FPS (in 2004)), so hopefully that should not be an excuse for poor server performance.

I mean, if Sony got it right at one point, certainly the professionals at A(D)venturtine will follow suit.

Just my two cents.
