- Free to play (smaller skill cap, can't own house, etc, etc)

Yep, world is big but not bih enaugh for a well populated server.

Nowadays it's a paradise for PvE'ers, because there's so many good spots around the world you can do for hours without getting interupted.

For a full server you would essentialy need something like quadruple the size of current world so PvE'ers could get their chance of getting inetrupted lessened, while there would still be no safe zones for all those who love the core idea of full loot system and a threaving, dangerous world.

You mean all the fourteen players still playing? :)

 

Jokes aside, Darkfall would benefit greatly from EVE-style scaling "security". Give the carebears their 1.0, a safe (well almost) place to do their thing and give the hardcore PvP people their 0.0, a jungle with the rules of the strongest.

EVE is the only successful FFA Full Loot PvP game, because it gives the players the freedom to choose how safe or risky they want their gaming experience to be.

What will ‘bring the game back’ is not the follow:
Its not changing the target system to a tab based system like all other MMOs.
Its not changing the world to look less realistic and more like a cartoon like all other MMOs
Its not removing all ships and all ship combat like in all other MMOs
Its not removing the ability to build and protect a player city like in all other MMOs
Its not removing all the AI from the PVE mobs and making them just attack in a straight line like all other MMOs.
Its not making it such that geography plays zero role in your combat decisions like in all other MMOs
And its not having AV post a daily work progress to their website
And, to be frank, its not AV becoming 100% clear and explict all of the time.
 
What would make the game explode in population is:
Making it easier and adding more quests.
 
The real reason people quit the game often has nothing to do with 99.9% of the reasons they say. Its nearly always because the game is flat out hard and it can take 6+ months of game play to be considered viable

does your game have rainbow sprinkles and magic ponies!?

I loved Darkfall...best game I ever played...but the population sucks.  At this point, you can still find pvp...but you'll run into the same people every day...gets old.

what they should have done is skiped that first part.

not really, before it was called Darkfall 2010 the next expension after conquer the seas and hellfreeze... but it was never delievered and as they feared loosing their credibility they starting naming it darkfall 2.0 (as it would be so a huge expansion) ...

if they would have skipped that part, people would have left anyways as they failed to deliever new content since ages...

however what really made them loose more people, was starting to talk about a wipe and not denying it..

Changing the target system to a tab based system like all other MMOs.  - Would for sure increase population, if you like it or not, however would be a different game but it may have a chance to survive
 
Changing the world to look less realistic and more like a cartoon like all other MMOs - What do you expect for the adaptions for the asian market? Thats something these people like and may get many more players, if you like it or not
 
Removing all ships and all ship combat like in all other MMOs - well, removing content in general would not improve population, but well, only AV themself could have such a stupid idea...

Well, the first points would mainly increase the game exactly in the same way as you say
Making it easier and adding more quests.
as they are targeting a different audience... they may change it to something you and me dont like, but they increase their income in subs dramatically...
 
While the last points would help the game as well but with its original fellowers which have quit.... and the game would stay at least in the core as it is and not be transferred to a Wow clone...

i tried darkfall 2 time in my life and both time i felt the game needed more than just pvp to make people group up... The only way i can see this become a reality is a simple suggestion that many said .

Implement a skill cap , give a ton more skill toward defense ( armor related ) weapon ( charge , stun , cripple etc..) and archery ( poison sting , ice arrow whatever).

That would yield a very different setup than currently (zerg the newest member of the opposite team) whereas people would tend to remember whos the healer and focus them wich can be used as a viable strategy in itself.... Right now you gotta skirmish then meet with your buds for the aoe circle jerk....

I'd still try darkfall if i had the time but i will definitely come back for 2.0 especially since i kind of like the gear skill cap implementation wich is kind of thinking outside the box ... a lot harder to make it work than a simple click 20 box and those are you primary skills everything decay by 1% per day .

If that was true than why aren't more PVErs playing the game right now? The entire server is pretty safe to PVE in right now . .. in fact I think its been over a couple months since I've been jumped while I was farming mobs (I don't do it often though but still).

 

The main problem is population because the game is a dozen times more enjoyable to a new player if there are busy NPC cities. New players come in right now and its a single-player game until they get into a clan for the most part. I used to be able to stay clanless and win fights often but now thats nearly impossible. If I wanted this game to be like other FFA PVP games where it was me against the world than I would have quit already. I tried to play like this but had to join a clan to compete since I can't play all the time.

NEWS FLASH! A bank was robbed the other day and a man opened fire on the customers being held hostage. One customer zig-zag sprinted until he found cover. When questioned later he explained that he was a hardcore Darkfall Online player and knew just what to do.

Then it wouldn't be DFO.

The entire point of DFO is that it is full PVP, full loot, full time.

Honestly looked like a lot of fun and I downloaded the trial to give it a run, but didn't work for me.  The graphics and interface were way too clunky, and the no skill cap was a huge put off as well so I would have to agree.

Aside from other obvious problems, the number one problem bar none is UNLIMITED SKILL CAP.

 

Completely ruins the game, just as a timer based skill increase kills EvE for me.
