When I mean Ultima Online vet, I don't mean one of those people that only played for 3 years. No, I played UO for over 10 years.
I do not know what sparked my interest in Darkfall all of a sudden, but it did. I cannot believe this game is already two years old. Anyways, I noticed a few stickies about the game and am currently reading up on it atm. I am downloading the game with a 14 day free trial. Are there any thing that I need to know about the game or some advice to give?
To me this looks like a game that is very reminiscent of Ultima Online. 1999 - Current UO veteran |

It's an amazing game, if I had more time right now for an MMO I'd be playing it. Once you get a mount, don't ride it into towns before dismounting, you'll get mount-jacked. |

Not as much of a RPG. Focuses on FPS combat and PvP warfare, but there's huge hidden PvE grind. Adrenaline rush is guaranteed and there's a feel of adventure. You gotta enjoy twitchy FPS combat to like the game, in my opinion. |

Be patient (sorta sounds like you are 10 years of uo) and don't expect to be maxed 6 months into the game. DF takes time. And get into a clan, that will open alot of new possibillities for you. Are you playing on EU or US? ***************************** |

The game is a bit of a grind, but if you focus on that alone and want to instantly be able to compete with vets then you'll only disapoint yourself. Enjoy the game, make friends and join a good clan. Most people in the game will help out new players with gear and advice because we like to see new blood entering the game. The combat is THE BEST in any MMO i've ever seen. Whether PVE or PVP its the most engaging of any type of MMO combat. Its not point and click and then AFK till its dead, it actually takes thought and strategy, and the whole time you need to be listening to mounts coming up on you and have an exit strategy to get away. The PVP fights are a pure adrenaline rush thats i've never experienced in any other game. People complain about bunny hopping but it's very hard to do right and takes skill to pull off well. The game is very skill based but i've seen people with 100 in every magic school and over 400 HP still get rolled because they're facing a guy with more personal FPS twitch skills and coordination. In closing, its just the best game ive played in a long time and the only MMO that can really keep my attention long term, when the next expac comes out (3 - 4 months) the game is going to be revitalized with tons of new content and game systems so get started now. |

Everyone had a great amount to say about the game, and a quick response. I appreciate it. It seems like it is one of those games where you have to enjoy the journey rather than focus on the 'end game'. Which is what UO was always about. Make friends / enemies, adventure, explore the land. UO wasn't much about PvE either, so to hear that the main focus of DF is just adventure and PvP sounds good to me.
Another question, does DF have housing? I know I could look this up, but I would rather ask a community.
Again, thanks for all the great replies so far. 1999 - Current UO veteran |

Originally posted by MaeEye Well, you will need to PVE a lot to work up your skills and also to make cash to be able to afford or craft your own gear, cause everything in the game has durability and will break eventually, plus the full loot aspect of PVP means you will lose a lot of gear if you die a lot in PVP. There is player housing but sadly it is very limited and rather exclusive. The housing in Darkfall consists of 5 different house sizes which are (smallest to largest) cottage, house, villa, large villa, and a keep. Just for a perspective there are only, I believe, 6 keeps in darkfall. It's very expensive to own a house unless you get lucky and can find one going vulnverable and capture it with a deed. But houses are fantastic for so many reasons, extra bind spot, personal storage safe outside of a bank where you can gear up and store items, personal garden and grove, and other fluff items. All these things are addon's and cost more money on top of your house, and they are rare. They say they are adding new house locations so who knows. At the moment all house bases are taken and have been for awhile. |

Originally posted by Melgaroth Man. This is sounding like deja-vu to me. Limited housing. Not enough plots. Full loot. Craft your own armor! This game sound very attractive to me. I don't want to raise my hopes up too much, but this could be my answer to a new style of UO. Some of the videos I've seen of large scale PvP looks phenominal, more so than what UO ever delivered.
Keeps sound like they should be very limited. One thing that I hated in UO was that the more recent UO got, the more keeps and castles you saw. Kind of took you out of the game. It should be when you see a keep, that you are like 'damn, that guy must be important.'
Vendors, do they exist aswell? Or does the game have some sort of auction house? Like would I be able to sell stuff I crafted on a vendor at my house? 1999 - Current UO veteran |

Yes vendors are an addon for housing, which adds to the value of owning your own home. There is no auction house, a lot of times you have to travel to NPC or player cities to do trades. Middle mans are often used for large things like houses or bulk items involving large amounts of gold. You must always be aware of trade gankers although that has declined with the new War declaration system changes and also the fact that they are changing how alignment works for the better in an upcoming patch.

The economy in DF is rough and the tools handed to you are bare. That said, the specific thing you ask about is there. Means yes, it is possible to place a vendor at your house and sells your crafted (and not crafted) goods. You should know that the vendor comes as rare drop you can attch to your house as an addon like someone described above. Beside this all other trade consists of face-to-face trade and a global trade chat tab all advertising, offers and demands need to go. There are improvements for economy planned, one known coming with next expac is a map with detailed information on all vendors and all offers.

Originally posted by MaeEye O`boy, you are in for a rude awakening.
I played UO from 98-04, and Darkfall is nothing like UO. The only thing you will recognise from UO is the looting style. Darkfall is 95% pve for 6 months if you want to be somewhat viable in pvp. The grind in this game is insane, and I`m the only one left of my eight RL friend. All former UO players.
The large endgame battles are fun though. A lot more fun than the O/C and faction fights in UO. Sadly we don`t have a lot of players left atm, so those fights are rare. Our hope is that the new patch will breathe some life into the game again, and hopefully new players like yourself wont have to go through the same grind we did. |

Originally posted by DarthRaiden Ahh clever, but you are barking up the wrong tree. Look at my post history and you`ll see I`ve been playing this game active for two years. I have no grind issue, as my char got all the nessesary stats and spell. My issue is the lack of players in this game.
What use do I have of a million gold, a full bank and a kick ass char if the game is going down the drain for lack of new players. That is something you never think about. All you guys care about is the ability to kill low level players and pretend it`s a well earned skill. I however want this game to flourish with high level pvpers. The citys should be full of people and sieges a daily event.
Right now everybody is waiting for the next patch, and the game has never been so empty. I havent been killed since feb 13, there is no one on mumble, hardly anyone in my clan of 50 persons log in and the alliance chat is quiet. Frankly I fear this will be the make of breake patch and I`m really scared.
So yes I bitch and do a well erned nerdrage once in a while. |

Originally posted by Hotjazz To summarize, you have a "complete" char, you thinking i like to kill low level players and you missing players to play. First if you have a complete char how can you know about the state of skill up progresssion ? You even feel like you can state exact numbers and claim it takes 6 months. How you can know this if you even take into account that the double speed up and offline skill up is just at best 2 months old ? Second because of my casual playstyle i can assure you that myself don't have the skills and spells at your levels. I guess even players joining long after me have better stats and paper skills then me. But not surprise here i guessed you macroed your way to max before you considered yourself "ready" for Darkfall. <sarcasm> My third comment is about your assumption that DF's skill progression is responsible for numbers. Let me ask you this then. They did speed up progression by x6 on magic and 2x on mellee, archery long ago, and then they did the stat adjustment for new players become faster more HP a year ago. If you assumption is true, why you now can watch a decline in numbers ? i think lower "grind" raises numbers, shouldn't you see a increase in numbers considering the lower "grind" ?
As for me i think it has become already too easy to skill up and thanks to something holy i guess they stoped the plan to increase crafting skill up and ruin whats left in crafting and economy. -----MY-TERMS-OF-USE-------------------------------------------------- "There was suppression of speech and all kinds of things between disturbing and fascistic." The grind is a large problem with Darkfall .... skilling up is now a ton easier, but as anyone who has played Darkfall long enough to have their newbness wear off ... the STAT Grind is what kills the game. There is also little to do besides kill mobs, or pointless player vs player. Which brings me to the second issue which kills Darkfall ... poor implementation of its pvp system. The whole guild, alliance, war, and racial alignments are all a complete joke which no one takes into consideration. Which turns the game into a gankfest with no repurcussion and most players lack the spine required to hold themselves to any level of moral correctness.
I've resubed to Darkfall four times now ... played for 3-4 months total, the game is gem waiting to be discovered and polished. The best thing for Darkfall would be to be sold to a developer team with half a clue. I almost want to wager the Armor sytem coming in this next ... year, will be scrapped like prestige classes.
Yes I am jaded ... I've given DF its fair time, and I'll probably come back in time, but right now the games a joke. |

Stats will also been put on meditation and stats benefit from double speed up too.

If your goal is to be advanced fast as possible, join a large clan as a newb. I suggest you to join The imperial army. After a 4-6 months, you will probably be ready to join any clan you want. Played DF trial for 2 weeks none stop. Check out my pvp video during trial.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJnU_JEqKRM |

Originally posted by DarthRaiden The Chaos Churches were a pretty bad idea. There are many suggestions in DarkFall to change the Alignement System, and it seems like they went with the easiest one, yet again. I guess that was obvious though, as their current alignement system was poorly implemented and would likely require to be fully re-written from scratch to really bring "consequences" back in the game. Chaos Churches are easier to implement and so is restricting alignement gain. At least they will make players entering Player City go grey, but I wish they didn't neglect other issues. There has been no mention of the famous Red Player+Blue Block/Healers group raiding NPC Cities "exploit", which is something I'd love AV addressed.
But right now I'm more worried about Aventurine's recent decisions such as the Armor System and the Symbols above Clan Alliance Players and Enemies. I think AV's is playing with fire and if those ideas go through, and especially the Armor System, they'll get burned. By burned, I mean that it will hit the playerbase. Won't kill the game, but it will damage the playerbase even further, that's for sure. ------ |

Crap. My clan is full of old MMORPGs' veterans with developped charcters. Who keep being killed by noobs with good FPS skills. I bet there are a lot of players in DF who would trade their maxed toons for good aim and twitch skills... |

To all of you who say that they slashed or going to slash the grind by half, I think you missed a lot of maths classes: infinity divided by two still gives infinity. Apart of that you missed the statistics classes. DF's player retention rate are obvious proof that there is something really wrong with the game. I bet myself on now the legendary grind and a lot of not fun game content for example: gathering iron nodes three hours straight anyone ? The speed Tasos and Sons are changing the game in the right direction is just killing it. |
