I tried the 1 week trial and liked the game enough. . . enough to pay $15 a month but not enough to shell out for the client. With all of the games available I tend to move around a bit.
Fallen Earth just gave away a tonne of client downloads for free. . several thousand. Each of those people need to pay for their first month. 2K users at $15 a month is a decent amount of cash even if they only stay for one month. These are people who are not likely to pay the full upfront price of an MMO to try it out - but they might stay around for a few months.
At first I thought. . crap I paid for that game. . full price and I could have gotten it free - but then I realized how much it might help the population etc.
Yes there is a one week trial. Most games seem great for the first week. I need to know if it will hold my interest past the first month. There might be a few thousand people willing to pay for the first month at $15.
If they really wanted to make money they should offer a monthly based subscription option where the client is free but you pay $19.95 a month instead of $14.95. If you want to start paying $14.95 you have to buy the client. . maybe your extra $5 could be banked toward that. . so client "appears" cheaper each month you play.
Just a thought. I know I would be playing right now if something like that were offered.

The game is new and on top of that games like WoW (even after 5 years) still require you to buy the box.
Played: World of Warcraft (5Y), WarHammer (3M), Anarchy Online, Runescape (5+Y), Lord of the Rings Online, Runes of Magic, City of Heroes/Villains, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Fallen Earth (1M) Currently Playing: Guild Wars |

Originally posted by Aethaeryn Damn. Wish i had a free client to FE, i would try it since i left after the end of beta. But a free client is way too utopic. Even though I'd jump at it, it will be seen as a sign of desperation for a quick and very short-term hook. I guess FE had to do it for a cash infusion, but hopefully DF wont have to go down that path. This game is worth the entertainment value, and having played for more than 6-months or so, i believe i got my monies-worth. |

I agree if you can charge for the client and things are working out well go for it. There are just so many people on the fence. . the $1 trial helped a lot though. Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is! |

I'm sure they are making sufficient money right now. That is why there was no need for a free trial until recently and because they know people are willing to pay for the client and the additional months.
Most MMOs charge for the client and the ones that don't (minus EVE) tend to not be very strong and are just desperately looking for players Played: World of Warcraft (5Y), WarHammer (3M), Anarchy Online, Runescape (5+Y), Lord of the Rings Online, Runes of Magic, City of Heroes/Villains, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Fallen Earth (1M) Currently Playing: Guild Wars |

However, you are still buying the client, as I stated.

Lowering the purchase price sends the message that your game is in trouble. While I wish they would do it, I were in their position I would not. There are just too many MMOs where the price of the client drops to essentially free ($15 for the box or key, with a month included) and they all look like they are failing. You see them on Steam for $9.99 and think "oh look, just like Vanguard." It's like a giant billboard reading STAY AWAY. The MMO industry is a minefield of failure. Setting Darkfall aside like this, even if it's just an act, is a smart move. einexile the meek |
