Oh well, perhaps the upcoming "expansion" will indeed kick off a population boom for DarkFall.  Reading through the official forums it would seem that both servers could use a population boost.

 

A recent clan count on EU server put it at around 10k (counting known inactives).  Yet, back 5-6 months ago the clan count was at around 15k.   Now since then they have opened up the NA server.  Recently they also allowed transfers from EU to NA.  So, even with quite a few known inactives to be included in the count... these links are about as close as you'll get to an accurate picture of the true population of both servers. 

Not sure how accurate it is, but it's been suggested on the official forums that the number of inactives from the list roughly equals those who are unclanned (which are not included in the count). 

Anyway, here is the info for those who care to look for themselves.

Well, when some MMO's sub numbers fall to a level that's no longer flattering, the developers will start using "unique character numbers" instead. I guess in Darth's case, when your game isn't doing very well, you focus instead on forum statistics. 

I guess what others have said before could be true... playing the DF Forum game is more fun than playing DF the MMO.

Kinda sad.

I guess brimming is the wrong word.  With Darkfall so large, the population is nicely spread out.  I just know the pvp is drawing hundreds at a time.  You coming back ripper?

After all the experience they have with being DDOS attacked. I guess they found a way to generate a lot of hits for their game on this site.

And seriously. If you are a bit of a tech guy, it's not hard to create or even download some little program that hits a sertain section of a website over and over and over again to generate hits.

We had that kind of programs in my previous job to run performance tests against our websites and web applications.

You can completely trottle and manipulate these performance programs to generate a sertain amount of hits, with random time intervals. All that kind of stuff.

Oh yes, I completely agree. I was being a little sarcastic to lighten up things a bit. I am just amazed as to the reasoning behind it. But desperate times call for desperate measures.


 

Since when has Aventurine not been desperate? They always have and always will. Up till the moment they pull the plug and sail away in their little rowboat with the little cash they have left.

So this doesn't suprise me one single bit.

 

Don't worry, Aventurine doesn't just work on DarkFall.

They have a lifetime contract making military training software for the Greek Air Forces.

 

So they wont run out of money, be sure of that.

Imo, they made a massive profit from DFO.

No advertising, just two servers, tiny dev team. They made shit loads of money just from the initial sales back in Ferbuary.

Add all the hackers with double and triple accounts + monthly fees for all these months and there you go, even more money.

 

In my book, Aventurine has succeded in many ways.

But im happy for one thing. They showed the big companies out there that games like DFO can work and will work if you make them properly.

Its still the sopwith Camels, but since Aventurine took over military production greek tanks hover and are terrain indipendent , laser beams towers kill any intruder and greek infantery lays  AoE super havoc meteor strikes and lava fountains on the enemys. No other military has that.

"Brimming" you say? Can you attach something more meaningful, like.... definitive numbers... to that? What constitutes "brimming" to you, might not mean the same to me.

See here's the thing with Darkfall. Similarly to a handful of other MMOs, it seems that hype about the game always seems to come in the form of vague hyperbole, that no one can ever define, but the fans always deem as "accurate" (as long as it's favorable, of course).

I can understand why they opt for that, though, seeing as how attempts at absolute numbers typically fall on their face. For example, the whole "2000 people fighting it out at the same time in the same area" claims that were made some time ago. It was called out as BS - even by people who were online and present at said event - and eventually, the story was changed to "well, they were spread out over a continent". Obviously "spread out over a continent" does not convey the same impression as  as "in the same area"...
 

Or, in other cases "There were 500 people fighting it out in the same area without lag and here's a link to a video to prove it".. The video shows about 50 people riding across the landscape, ending with a few minutes of said people shooting blue fireballs from a distance,or AOE nuking from closer in. Call them out on it not proving 500 people and they say "well you can't see them all at the same time". This prompts the obvious response: Well then it isn't "proof of 500" is it? It's proof of about 50-60 fighting it out in the same area at the same time with notable lag."

I've always enjoyed that about the DF hype machine... When it uses numbers at all, it treats them as malleable, fluid things rather than absolute indications of quantity. 50 can easily be 500... just add a zero! No one will know the difference!

Its marketing was quite clever in this respect, because it instilled a sense of superiority in the user-base, and in fact was able to pass off lousy features and design decisions as 'hardcore.' imagine if you would a car that is constantly breaking down, and horribly unintuitive to drive. It has 12 gear boxes in seemingly random places, and a steering wheel that is cross-wired so left goes right and right goes left. It's common to spend 3 hours to trying to start thing. Bad design? No, no... go back to carebear Hondas, you just aren't a hardcore enough driver.

Now normally if you limit yourself to a digital distribution model, you end up offering some sort of trial or demo and then hooking it into marketing and upsells to payment methods. Drive before you buy. But in our Model T Darkcar, this isn't the case. Instead you buy the car based on the very hype that says Consumer Reports 2/10 was a hit job against small indie car-markers which cater to YOU, the hardcore elite driver. Hell, the reviewer only drove for 6 hours and 3 of those were spent getting the ignition to turn over.

That goes for other MMO too tho. 

Scale down MMO experience by selling single player content as MMORPG, limiting the unique MMORPG experience by deflating it through limitations like classes, instances and whatnot. Make the unique experience of a single unique player the experience of everyone else. and still claim is a MMORPG.

Make your time spend in a MMO a emotionally irrelevant, random repeatable event for the random everyone, call it a polished MMO experience  and sell it as massive online multiplayer game.

Your game is lowest common denominator of all MMO game experiences and you have go the pace and have to enjoy the game mechanics of your grandma happens to love your game too. (Note that some grandmas could be tough  and accept full loot but i doubt they can switch the wepons so fast and adapt to FPS easily)

I was contemplating it.  I actually do like Darkfall, I just don't have time to commit to it.  FYI - I'm not the "ripper" you actually know from in game and clans, I just have the same gamer tag. 

Regarding the numbers, I'm genuinely curious as to the total population.

Imo, they made a massive profit from DFO.

No advertising, just two servers, tiny dev team. They made shit loads of money just from the initial sales back in Ferbuary.

Add all the hackers with double and triple accounts + monthly fees for all these months and there you go, even more money.

 

 

This could easily be true. I find it interesting, because Darkfall's business and marketing models goes against a lot of conventional wisdom.

Most MMOs fall into the trap of trying to be "everything to everybody" but Darkfall went the route of being "nothing to nobody." Its marketing was quite clever in this respect, because it instilled a sense of superiority in the user-base, and in fact was able to pass off lousy features and design decisions as 'hardcore.' imagine if you would a car that is constantly breaking down, and horribly unintuitive to drive. It has 12 gear boxes in seemingly random places, and a steering wheel that is cross-wired so left goes right and right goes left. It's common to spend 3 hours to trying to start thing. Bad design? No, no... go back to carebear Hondas, you just aren't a hardcore enough driver.

Now normally if you limit yourself to a digital distribution model, you end up offering some sort of trial or demo and then hooking it into marketing and upsells to payment methods. Drive before you buy. But in our Model T Darkcar, this isn't the case. Instead you buy the car based on the very hype that says Consumer Reports 2/10 was a hit job against small indie car-markers which cater to YOU, the hardcore elite driver. Hell, the reviewer only drove for 6 hours and 3 of those were spent getting the ignition to turn over.
 
Darkfall is a status symbol. A secret handshake for the self-described hardcore elite PvP crowd. Whether or not this is actually true is irrelevant. The perception is everything. Once the consumer is psychologically bought-in to an idea like this, he becomes your marketing force. Marketing is normally a huge budget of any major MMO company. If you can get your players to do it for free, you're way ahead of the competition.

I never said DF was vapor, I said it appeared to be vapor at the time. I also said it would never release with all it's claims intact, if it released at all. And I was correct.
 

And you still take WAY too much personal interest in how DF is percieved by others.

By the way, the "sopwith camels with lasers" bit was funny. You should try to lighten up like that more often, your blood pressure will thank you.

I've been stuck at home from an annoying injury for the past 2 months. I have way too much time on my hands to play, which is quite a change of pace for me.

There is no question in my eye that the population on NA-1 is rising and quite noticeably, especially the last week or so. Hardly concrete evidence, but for the curious that is my experience. How many stay is always the question.
