I'm making one change to Darkfall. Instead of the system where you do something over and over to make your skill in that thing increase, you get skill points to spend on whatever skill you like.

Is this a deal breaker for you? Does the game now suck, and you don't want to play? Everything else stays the same.

It works like this. You kill stuff, do quests, whatever, you gain xp. When you get enough xp you get a skill point, and you can use it to buy a new skill, or raise a skill you already have, any skill.

You have made it a level based game, no I won't be playing.

I am very much looking forward to the replies to this. Me, yeah, I would.

Judging by the first reply, my suspicions are already confirmed though.

Asheron's Call was like that. As you used skills they increased a little, but the expirience you recieved for the actual kills you could use as you wanted on whatever skills you have chosen. That's why I have always said that the standard MMO is EQ based, while they should have followed AC instead.

((Edit: AC is still around so I should have said 'is like that'.))

Explain exactly how getting a set amount of xp and then spending it on character points is different from a level based game, except that there is no visible level number.  If you count how many batches of points you have recieved that is your level.

There will be skill levels, just like Darkfall has skill levels now.

Are you saying your skills don't increase in Darkfall when you use them?

You swing your sword in Darkfall now, and go from sword skill 1 to sword skill 2, right? Ortsword skill "not so good" to sword skill "good", or however you want to label it.

You swing your sword, get xp and when you get enough xp you get a skill point. You spend your skill point on going from sword skill 1, to sword skill 2, or from sword skill not so good, to sword skill good.

How is one a level system, but not the otehr? Eitehr way you go from sword skill not so good to sword skill good, right?

What about a system where, when you use a skill, the skill goes up very slowly.. but you still get XP overall.  So, you use your first to punch a monster, your skill goes up with every swing, but when the monster dies you get one lump of XP minus the xp that already went into the skill.

So, if something took 50 swings to bring down, and each swing gave you one xp into your punch skill, you would get 50xp just for swinging at it.  Now, imagine that it died and gave you 100xp, but instead of that 100xp, you would get only 50 (you already received 50xp from your 50 punches).  With that 50xp you could put that into ANY skill you wanted.  Even back into punch.  What do you think about that?

There are levels yes, but rather than having certain skills that improve automatically as you level, or stats that do the same, you can control exactly what you do with those points, so you have full control over your character's advancement. Also, depending on how wisely you spend your points, a level 30 could actually be a better fighter than a level 50, you don't know just by their level. So say I spent all of my time crafting and was a level 50 blacksmith, it would just say level 50. Thus the playing field is leveled by not knowing just how dangerous your opponent actually is.

If you did not do the work in that skill why should you be rewarded with the ability of that skill?

If you want a good swords skill then go fight, but if you only fight with a sword why would anyone allow you to use that experience to add points to magic??

Because study is often as important as real expirience.

I understand what you're trying to say, but that's not really the topic.

Would you play the game, or not?

This is pretty much how KOTOR works, and one of the number one games out at the moment, Fallout 3.

Gamers buying Fallout 3 think it's fun, not "dumb".

Doesn't really make sense to call the developers fo the current number one selling game "dumb", so I think you are safe adn answering.

Play it, or now the game sucks for you?

What's to say that you didn't spend your off time studying magic? The skill costs for magic would mean that you wouldn't advance much in your swordsmanship if you were spending your points on magic, so eventually you would just ditch the sword altogether, but wouldn't a fledgling wizard have to depend on something else anyways until they learned powerful enough spells?

So while you were fighting with that sword you were reading about using spells??

Nice try but not even close to a good argument...

Yeah, which is one of the reasons I quit playing. They kept raising the level cap. Last I knew is was 125, but it could have gone much higher by now.
