For some much-needed perspective in these forums, here's just a few that have made Wired's annual vaporware list, several of them for several years in a row:

- Unreal

- Warcraft 3

- Diablo 2

- Half-Life 2

- Team Fortress 2

Funny that all 5 of the above games turned out to be amongst the best games ever made in their respective genres...

Just a thought.

edit: much to my surprise the original Half-Life was also labelled vaporware and "too ambitious" by several industry commentators, and also struggled for a long time to find a publisher.

Another one for the list - Vista/Longhorn.

No. Wired's lists are just  full of crap. A game that has a good chance of delivering on it's promises isn't vaporware.

As I have mentioned before, I was really looking forward to TF2.  I was playing OGL and competetive stuff like that.  But I am 10 years older, and dont play those games anymore.  To me, it matters little that it finally released.  Might as well have been vapor forever.   I hope DF releases before I finally start doing something useful with my spare time.  

BTW, which one of those titles was the first game, let alone first MMO, for the dev team?  Any indie dev teams on that list?

None, all those dev studios had previous experience and had shipped titles, all of them. Some of them are/were even famous for taking long with their games (Blizzard, Valve). There's also a bigger list of games that didn't materialize, but since they didn't people tend to forget about them. With such different standards, how can you hope to make these an argument for or against Darkfall or Aventurine? At this point you must accept that the only thing that can conclusively dispel the doubts in the the mind of most people is nothing short of release or a radical and sudden change of policy in Aventurine's PR. The games you mentioned were said to be vaporware during the middle of the development process, not 5 or 6 months before release, because of the wealth of information available on them by that time.

But what about the dozens of other titles out there that have turned out to be vaporware and never released. I'm not arguing that Darkfall is vaporware, because I have no opinion on the game. But you have to admit the games you chose to present make the argument rather skewed.

*sniff* I smell someone trying to defend Darkfall's supposed status as non-vaporware. How touching.

So you'd say Darkfall has the same chances as the games you mentioned? Because those are the games and type of games he was referring to.

Yes they ALL we're Vaporware (to begin with), right up till they we're beta'd. Exactly as DF is until it reaches a beta/release.

Here is a thought...

All those games you listed were, and drumroll please, RELEASED.

I want Darkfall as much as anyone, but I am not convinced at this point that there is anything to really hope for as far as this game is concerned.

I can't WAIT to be proven wrong though.
