Thought it would be freaking sweet if your clan memers could form a phalanx in which you and your clan members overlap your shields to block magic and arrows. What is your guys thoughts on this?

I think formations is a must if you are more then maybe 5 players in your team. Friendly fire, collision detection, no floating name tags and real time combat with out targeting will estroy the zerg style combat.

But i dont think the formations and a phalanx will be easy to do. You would need many friend and invest alot of time to learn it.

And if the phalanx is anything but perfect, it will fail. So will people begin to complain the formation doesnt work.....but the problem is that you havent trained it enoughe

As a Martial Art instructor i see this all the time. People that dont want to train, blame the system when it doesnt work for them

A phalanx could easily be formed, if they will make it so you can press a button and move into it, i dont know but i hope not because that takes a good bit of skill out of pvp. Seems of how the one formed through a button would be nearly perfect while if there wasnt a pre set formation, it would add to how much people would have to learn to work together. But from what ive seen with their collision mechanics, it would seem like it would be easily done but hard to get perfect. It probably also depends on what your trying to block :P i do hope that a shield wont stop a boulder fired from a trebuchet.

We know AoC will have a button to press if you want into a formation.

I really hope DF doesnt.

I want players to learn to do it themselves. If anyone have done real military service, there you also train formations. The first weeks its just hilarious to watch. But after time it begins to work.

That is how i want it to be in DF

Its the total team skill that matters. If your army/team/squad trains regulary...you will become really good.

If there was a button you could press, it would be easy to take attaks, plus if you were 5 against 3, it would be easy to get killed because of the team of 5's formation. so basicly, it would be a matter of numers, and not skill.

People will have their skills and bodies, and the tactics are upto the individual simple. Mindless button mashing will not live here I hope.

Nice idea and sound pretty but wasted effort if individualy people can make a formation, what should be implimented is proximity bonuses for people with shields raised.
