The Internet. Serious business. |
It all depends the game. For games with less MMO-ishness (Guild Wars), I wouldn't pay a monthly fee. I REALLY like alternative subscription payment methods (lifetime subscription during open beta (LOTRO)), but am not a big fan of free play but charge for content. |

MMO's take alot of money to make, during the production time of the game millions of dollars are spent in the creation of the game. During that time no income is coming in, they have to rely on investors to make these games you know. When the game is complete those investors want a return on their investments. I see that you mentioned your dad banning anything with a monthly subscription, that tells me your a kid who is probably yet to enter high school where you will learn about basic economics and further. Why does gaming companies charge for their service, quite simply it is the following:
When you grow up, you will learn that nothing is free and that everything has a price. If your old enough, mow a few lawns in your neighborhood at 15.00 a piece. In one week you could have enough to pay for 3 to 4 months of gametime. When I was a kid I mowed lawns, had a paper route and did various odd jobs to make money. Problem today is kids like yourself expect to be given everything and to give nothing in return which teaches you nothing and prepares you to go into the world ill-equipped to deal with the problems you will face when your on your own. |

LOL I remember the credit system on the old BBS network. Games like MajorMUD I would spend nearly 18 hours a day playing.. I ran up over 150 a month just for that game alone. Those were the days.. |

Have you heard about those things you can get called jobs? Go get a newspaper round kid. You can't start early enough to learn the value of money you worked hard for. If not that, then surely you must get an allowance each month for doing chores around the house? Instead of spending all that, then expecting your parents to fit your MMO bills why don't you save some of it towards buying a game time card for the MMO you wish to play? |

I don't vote... Im against monthly fees, arenanet is doing good without them but currently all good games 'cept Guildwars have fees so I'm still paying... When a real good MMO without fees comes out I will stop, right now I guess that game will be GW2. I don't believe for a second that Blizzard uses more than a buck/player of the $15 for updates, servers and so on. The rest just goes in their pockets. And they still takes money for the expansions... Monthly fees will become a thing of the past... Guildwars have sold over 5,5 millions copies (and that was 3 months ago, don't have current numbers) and much of that is because they don't have monthly fees. The other reason is that they have some of the worlds best programmers including Jeff Strain (Diablo, Warcraft 3). A game without monthly fees will get a bigger playerbase but they might still earn less bucks, they will have to release a expansion every year. If Darkfall releases without fees I will buy it, I doubt I will if they will take 15 bucks. |

Monthly fees (or P2P) is become less and less attractive. When there were few players in the market, P2P was a way to lock in stable income. Now, with more and more options available in the MMO Market, F2P is taking a much larger share. In fact, even Blizzard has stated that F2P is the future of the MMO market, and that not going F2P in asia was a big mistake, that ended up costing them a lot of money. More and more AAA games are going to be coming out with a F2P business model, as it allows them to reach critical mass both faster and cheaper. It also provides a more flexible business model, which can be optimized for specific market demands. P2P is in fact a death sentence for many small to mid sized games, and as such will actually cause the game to fail, when a F2P model would greatly improve the chance of sucess, and the overall revenue earned. |

Originally posted by Superman0X sure, it is POSSIBLE that it would make more money, but how would this be done? 2 words: item malls
the stupidest idea EVER it gives people an advantage over others because they have the deepest pockets while paying the 15 dollars a month would give everyone an equal chance in the game, would take skill to actually fight and get whatever gear/gold you need not just buying ten thousand gold and the latest and greatest tier 2935283957948572 gear |

No game has failed because it was pay to play, games fail because they fail to deliver content, excitement and most of all competence is getting rid of bugs/exploits. let me explain something here, if every game was free to play you would have those item malls where you would end up spending alot more then 15.00 a month to get your charaters geared up and able to complete with people that had tons of money to just waste. |

Ya, taking a 27 million dollar loan to develop a game and then putting it up for free would be a smart bussines move... Maintaining servers and a site, patches, GM staff... All this isn't free you know. Plus, not being able to use a credit card isn't a problem, there most probably will be pre-paid game cards. |
