Runescape: Grand Exchange Overview

MMORPG.com Runescape Correspondent Fasail Baig writes this look at the Grand Exchange, a new buying and selling feature in the game.

Are you a merchant that is tired of typing: "selling (item name)" 500 times over just to sell an item? Do you think world switching several times over to find a buyer is ridiculus? Try a new update to Runescape, the Grand Exchange. The Runescape Grand Exchange is a great way of making some quick and easy cash. It is a very useful new aspect of the game, and it helps traders and merchants greatly, as it speeds up the buying and selling world. Instead of trying to find a buyer/seller at a bank or populated are, you simply put in a buy order and as soon as one becomes available for the price you set, you will have it!

About the Grand Exchange

The Grand Exchange is a large marketplace located in Varrok. You can use the Grand Exchange, also referred to as the GE, to buy or sell almost anything. The GE allows a player to buy or sell an item at any time in the world, and it will be sold or bought respectively by another player. They do not have to meet up and do a trade, as it will just hold the goods for you until you pick them up, making the process very efficient and handy.

You don't even have to be present when you're waiting on your trade to complete! You can be off doing something else, such as fishing or saying demons, and when your trade is complete, the Grand Exchange will notify you. No more standing around at banks for hours! Before you can use the Grand Exchange, however, you will need to go through a tutorial. I suggest going to the Grand Exchange Tutor for it, as the founder, Brugsen Bursen, will give you a more in depth tutorial and even include the history, which no one really cares about. It can be very boring, and seriously, who wants to sit there listening to a guy babble on when you could be making millions?

The Grand Exchange is not a very complex system, but rather is very simple. You can buy and sell items with ease. All you do is put your bid or items up, and when someone matches your bid, you receive your money/items, and your trade is complete. The time is usually not a matter. However, every now and then, you will have to wait for it to complete, but for the most part, it will happen almost instantaneously.

Selling Items at the Grand Exchange

To sell items using the Grand Exchange, simply talk to one of the clerks, or just right- click and select the "Exchange" option. It will pop up a window showing the buy/sell offers that you have available at the moment. Non-members can only buy/sell 2 things at a time, while Members can buy/sell 6.

Now, let's begin selling. First, click the sell slot. The items you want to sell must be in your inventory, an you can sell anything that is tradable. If you have large quantities of items that are not stackable, bank notes are also compatible with the Grand Exchange. Each item you wish to sell (or stack of items) counts as one slot.

Boxed Armor

It can be hard for selling armor normally in the GE, especially if you are a non-member. With only 2 slots, how would sell a full set of armor? Well, Jagex thought of this and now you can convert armor into a boxed set. This is excellent because you can sell the WHOLE set of armor for only 1 slot. All you have to do is have the required armor pieces with you, then just talk to a Grand Exchange clerk. However, you MUST have the complete set to box it, and they are as follows:

  • Dwarf cannon sets: Cannon base, stand, barrels, and furnace.
  • Enchanted robe sets: Hat, robetop, and bottoms.
  • Splitbark armor sets: Helm, body, boots, gauntlets, and legs.
  • Mystic robes sets (normal, dark, light): Hat, top, bottoms, gloves, boots.
  • Third Age ranger armor set: Coif, body, chaps, vambraces.
  • Dragonhide armor sets (green, blue, red, black): Body, chaps, vambraces.
  • God armor sets (Guthix, Saradomin, Zamorak): Platebody, full helm, kite shield, platelegs/plateskirt*
  • Trimmed and gold-trimmed armor sets (black, adamant, rune): Platebody, full helm, kite shield, platelegs/plateskirt *
  • Barrows armor sets* (Ahrim, Dharok, Guthan, Karil, Torag, Verac): Body, legs, head, weapon
  • Normal metal armor sets (bronze, iron, steel, black, mithril, adamant, rune): Platebody, full helm, kite shield, platelegs/plateskirt *
  • Trimmed and gold-trimmed wizard sets: Hat, robetop, bottoms
  • Third Age mage sets: Body, legs, amulet, hat
  • Infinity robe sets: Hat, top, bottoms, gloves, boots
  • Trimmed and gold-trimmed dragonhide armor sets (green, blue): Body, chaps
  • Blessed dragonhide armor sets (Guthix, Saradomin, Zamorak): Body, coif, chaps, bracers
  • Dagannoth armor sets (rockshell, spined, skeletal): Helm, platebody/body/top, legs/chaps/bottoms
  • Third Age melee armor set: Platebody, full helm, kiteshield, platelegs ?Gilded armor sets: Platebody, full helm, kite shield, platelegs/plateskirt *
  • Dragon armor sets: Chainbody, medium helm, platelegs/plateskirt *

* - All items in this set must have the same symbol ("l" or "sk"), or they cannot be boxed.

I>NOTE: To open these boxes sets to retrieve the contents, simply take them to the Grand Exchange clerk. DO NOT right-click and click 'destroy', as this will NOT open the box, it will destroy the box and everything in I, and you will loose your armor and therefore money!

Setting the Price

When you are buying and selling, you are able to adjust the price to your liking. Although you can only go 5% above and below the normal market price, this can be handy. If you are going to sell, I suggest going as far below the price as possible. It is faster, but if you have an item that is worth more and it is well known, I would go 5% above. A lot of players, when buying food, will pick the item, make the amount in the thousands and then buy at the highest they can. Then, anything below that will be also sold to them. This is very handy if you are in need of an item and you do not care the price, just simply go 5% over the market price, and you could end up with the item and some money back.
