Do you ever get the feeling that you are being cheated out of your money? Have you ever thought a deal was too good to be true? If you have, it probably is. Scamming is a big problem in the Runescape world. Greedy and lazy players will usually do anything to get money without actually doing any work. Don't be fooled by high levels acting nice. For almost all of us we have been scammed at least once, and if you haven't been yet - give it time. This guide will tell you how to avoid some of the common Runescape scams. First off, never rush trades. Scammers will always try to rush through the trading screens so that an inexperienced player will miss some very important points. Take your time check both screens. Whenever you make a trade for gold, always keep a few things in mind. When you sell something for, let's say 20k, which is 20,000gp it should say 20k as the trade window (20,000 gold). What a lot of people will do is put up 1000k which is a million GP then they will take off 900k. This makes 100k look like 1000k, now if you were rushing through trade screens you might overlook the missing zero. Another thing to look for is Runescape players trying to scam you by adding a 4 at the end of the number which looks almost like k. This is not used very much anymore, but again, if you were rushing through your trade you might miss it and get scammed. Now just remember to never rush through trade screens.
Hacking is also a big problem. To keep from losing your account, just follow a few things:
Another big issue is using Runescape autos or "cheats" like autominer or autotalk, bots, macros, hacks or any of the numerous Runescape cheats or things of that nature that you think at least in the beginning will make your Runescape tasks easier. These programs may look good, and may even work, but they are often trojans themselves that are designed to plant themselves in your computer to steal things like passwords to Runescape accounts, and sometimes even more important things. Remember when downloading anything related to Runescape, or really anything at all, you have the risk of downloading something called a keylogger or trojan, so it's best to run a firewall and anti-spyware and antivirus software at all times, and sometimes even these are not sufficient. A good antivirus/antispyware software is AVG Free, which can be downloaded (for no cost, as the name suggests) from http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe.
A key logger will track your every move and every key you type on your computer without you knowing and more importantly will tell someone your passwords for Runescape if you don't remove it in time. Almost none of these autos really work, however, and you have an extremely high risk of being caught and banned. Simply don't try them, and you won't have to face the consequences.
Some commonly used scamming techniques you have to watch out for are:
Item Swap
Person A: Selling 5000 Yew logs for 100gp ea!!
Person B thinks: *WOW, cheap!*
Person B trades Person A
Person A puts up 5,000 Yew logs, asking person B to hurry as they have to go.
Person B puts up the money; Person A declines, and says "Oops"
They trade again, Person B puts up the money, Person A puts up a DIFFERENT type of log; Person B accepts without checking the trade screen - Person B has been scammed, Person A logs out.
This often occurs with logs, noted armor and weapons.
Armor Trimming
Mostly a trick for inexperienced players, where scammers ask players for their armor to trim, or to edge with gold to increase its value, and usually log out after trading it. There is no such thing as armor trimming. This is impossible, so don't fall for it.
One Selling, One Buying
This will often occur in a crowded marketplace, with friends teaming up to scam you. Here's how it works...
Person A and B are friends; Person C is a regular player.
Person B: 'Selling Dragon Long 110k'
Person A: 'Buying Dragon Long 150k!!'
Person C thinks: *WOW! If I buy this from Person B for 110, and sell for 150k, I can make 40k profit!!!'*
Person C: Trades Person B; buys Dragon Long; trades with Person A; Person A declines and logs off.
Password Blocked
One of the oldest tricks in the book.
Person A: Hey look! Jagex blocks your password: ****** (he/she just typed a bunch of asterisks)
Person B: Wow cool! (types password)
Person B finds out he was scammed and logs out to change his password, in which time Person A logs in to Person B's account and steals all of his/her items.
Item multiplier scam
Person A lures others to a quiet area
Person A: I know a way to multiply your items! Drop your most valuable item on the ground, then press ""alt+F4" / "ctrl+W" / "Alt+F+C" / "Alt+Down arrow+Up arrow+Enter."(All of which are shortcuts to close the browser)
Person B drops items and closes the browser/client.
Person A waits to collect items.
There are many others to add to this list, most of which can be avoided with a little common sense.
In conclusion, be careful about what you download, never give out your password to ANYONE, and always look at both trade screens very carefully when trading.
Well, thanks for this post, but in truth most of those scams aren't possible anymore. Jagex created a trade-limit over a year ago, and also got rid of PKing. Also, passwords ARE blocked from the game now, so that scam wouldn't work either. There is a limit on the amount of goods you can see on the ground, (i believe it's 3k?) If you were actually able to scam someone, it wouldn't be for anything worth talking about, and it'd be pretty hard to do even that with all the warnings Jagex have put into trade, (for example, if you take something away from the trade a red "!" flashes on the screen for a few seconds.)
The hacking scam still works, but it is risky. They could always type their password in parts, but to actually get their items, you either have to go to Bounty Hunter, or try your luck at the Party Room. Bounty Hunter was made to "replace" PKing in RuneScape, and it is very risky to go in to BH to transfer items to your account. You'd need two people; one on your account, and the other on the person getting hacked's account. People always try to attack other people who carry expensive items, and if they see that you are transferring, they will team up and most likely kill you, unless you are a high level. Party Room is even more risky. If you put an item in that is >50,000GP, the bankers will announce the party for all of RuneScape players to see. If the party is >1,000,000GP, Hundreds of players flock to get a shot at getting it.
RuneScape has done a pretty good job and erasing scamming from the game, but in turn this has also driven away most of the old players from RuneScape. The game was best liked because of its PvP aspect. Since that is gone now, (besides Bounty Hunter and "PvP Worlds," which not many like,) many of the beginning players, and most loyal players have quit RuneScape. But that is another story.
i still sees alot of scams, saying that they will buy your sword of 1mil but you cant scam anymore because of the new system they put
~~although no one seems to like the new system
You do know Jagex don't allow people to trade like that right lol ....
sorry but this article is for the old great runescape
but as of now rs died a long time ago
P>S>
just a heads up this system have been added almost 1 years ago
Before the update there were many scammers people complained now since the update was released, Jagex thought no more complaints and scammers now people are complaining about no Wildy and the trade limit.
In fact scamming has become harder, although it's not yet impossible to misuse players or even real life trade.
Real life trading still happens through the Bounty Hunter Cave where person.1. take a sara set into the cave and let's person.2. kill him. The penalty of 3minutes is often not enough for anti-reallife pk'ers to kill the offenders for they can tank over 3minutes. In some cases they even get help from clanmembers or friends who defend them by attacking the anti-reallife pk'ers (i just use this term freely here).
A not illegal way to still sell your goods against a higher price then the GE or new trade system allows. Just add in junk in the trade. This was what happend on the last added quest: while guthix sleeps.
The new armour and robes were sellable like this: person.1. obtained the items. Person.2. wants to have them no matter what. He offers for instance 3 milion gp. Normal trades wouldn't allow it. Though person.1. obtained during his rs carreer a lot of junk (read logs, bowstrings, runes, whack arrows etc). Normally these goods are hard or almost impossible to sell. They still have a value though ofcourse. When they are added in the trade suddenly person.1. can obtain lots of gp's.
Greets Minikillers
It's pretty hard to scam in RS but here are two more scames you should watch out for.
1.Although many know this if a player offers to "trim" your armour it cannot be done.
2.This is one that players that who aren't paying attention will miss. There is no name for this scam so let me give you an example. You want to trade a granite maul and the other person offers 200K (WOW) but then the trade table exits out and the other player says its an accidentSo you you offer the granite maul but this time the player offers 20K.You zccept the trade but by the time you see that you only got 20K teh other player logs off.
Also it is possible to trade up to a 250K difference if each player has a certin amount of "quest points"
opps sorry about the spelling errors.
Thank you for telling me all their "tricks" i feel that the runescape community is great and all but the problem is with some pple who are trying to ruin it... Good thing runescape has that report abuse thing and the trade limit... Even though many dont like the trade limit it stopps scamming. I also like your grand exchange article... Kind of persuasive which i like
I remeber the old runescape without the trade limmit and one easy way to make money was as a information monger/guide now its not exactly moral but back in the day before quest help it was the best way to get information/find places and yeah their were people that would scam and charge a bunch of money for a easy to obtain bit of information and i think that is why alot of people dont like the trade limit but i was playing the other day and someone was guiding people to fist of guthix for 5k it was rediculus because now the world map shows were everything is and what it is
P.S. cant do gramer at all so idecided instead of trying and failing gramar i would just leave it without gramar because when i use gramar it confuses people
