Star Wars: The Old Republic News - Sign Up for Beta!

Posted by Michael Bitton on Sep 29, 2009  | 91 comments in our forums

Sign ups for the beta test of Star Wars: The Old Republic are now being taken on the official The Old Republic website!

Would be testers will be selected from the Star Wars: The Old Republic community by use of a number of factors including, age, region, and system specifications. You must be 18 years of age to sign up and you'll need an account in good standing at the official The Old Republic website.

The test will be conducted in phases, with smaller groups initially, and an intent to expand gradually as the test goes along.

If you don't have an official The Old Republic community account you'll need to sign up for one here (and be sure to check off that you want to test the game). If you've already got an account, well what are you waiting for!? Sign up for the beta!

A Game Testing FAQ is also available for viewing here.

There's no info on this currently, but I imagine they will want to include a wide range of system specifications in their test, so I wouldn't worry about it.  They know the game will run on the high end systems, I imagine it's the lower end stuff that really needs to be put through the paces.  Just as a disclaimer though, I don't work for BioWare (obviously) and I have no idea what their particular processes will be, I'm just speculating here.

They have said that that is part of what they are testing, to determine min system requirements.  The beta signup scans ur computer, and they are looking for people from all walks and experiences.  But sys reqs will be determined via beta, not before.

FYI right now the site is bouncing up and down.  I suggesting waiting for a few hrs before attempting sign up to let them work out the issues they are currently having.

most beta will try and cover not just the top of the line but also work on lower end systems. The idea is that in beta they also work to hash out what will and will not work as well. In some cases might even be better to not have top of the line to get into betas as will really need to work the spectrum.

It's really messed up right now.  It's giving my a site unavailable message, but still letting me see half the thread in a really distorted look, I can click reply, but can't type anything...  so IDK they may not even realize there is a problem if some people can still get in and post.

Doesn't work on FF3.5.3 for me, but loads fine in Safari and Chrome.  Either way it's down for 'maintenance' now anyway.

Registration is closed due to some maintenance atm. I don't think signing up the first day gives you an advantage. With the millions I expect to sign it the mathematical prababilities are slim anways.

And see it in that way: when we don't get in beta, we are gonna be surprised by the story as we should when the game goes life.

That's not good for me, my 8800GTX was sent off to get a new one.  It went bad and so BFG was replacing it.  Right now I have a crappy 8600GT in its place.  I have a dxdiag from a few weeks back but I guess it will scan with my crappy card in.

Well beta isn't going to start in the next week, wait till your new card comes back before signing up. I it will probably be a good couple months before they start actual testing and the chance of getting in first round draft is slim, so just be patient and sign up when your comp is back up to full.

That said, I ran across this in their FAQ.  I think this is their answer to trying to get everyone that wants to test in to testing.  You test a session, and then other people test another session.  This is from their FAQs:

When each testing session ends, will the chosen players be able to test again?

Our approach is to have new testers for each testing session. That said, players who give excellent feedback or find and report good bugs may be considered for additional testing sessions.

Yes, it's not the most advanced machines that are favored for any game's beta testing, but simply the widest variety of systems they can get.

I believe for the firs phase of beta they're going to be taking the higher end machines for the simple fact that they need to make sure the game works before they start testing machine performance. System Reqs will be the last thing they rest, right around the time of stress testing (normally right before open beta).

You might not get in with the first wave, but you could get in with the second, third, or open

Not always true. For Warhammer, my brother got in WELL before I did...he got in when you could only play Greenskins and Dwarfs...and his system wasn't even close to mine performance wise.

They will take all kinds of people to start with...ironing out system reqs and optimizing the game early is a big thing they can do early...just look at what happened with AoC.

Yeah, for a game like this, I expect a set amount of a certain range of specs.  So they might take 1000 low end, 2000 medium, 3000 high end, or something like that.

It's been down all darned day. I just found out about this about like.. at 1PM my time. I'd say it's a lost cause, considering the bandwidth and the number of hits the site is getting at once with EVERYONE who wants a piece of this.. It's chaotic. I'm kinda thinking they shouldn't have released it to the public, but if they didn't we wouldn't be here talking about it. XD

But I'm sure they're most likely trying to fix the bandwidth problem on the site, but each time they get it up MORE people flood at once. There's no way to regulate how many people come and go at once. I want in this, my friends want in this, their friends. It's insane.

We all want a piece of the sweet, delicate, heavenly <insert favorite dessert here> that will be KotR. And only a few of us truly will get a piece of it before it's release. We just want to be that one guy, you know? That one person who gets in while everyone else doesn't. It's our duty as gaming nerds to get into beta testing for one of the most anticipated MMOs that's going on the market since WoW. So we can say "I was there."

It may be days, weeks, even months before we'll be able to get into this and it actually works. But we still need to understand that not all of us will get in. And accept that, we'll just wait for the release and pretty much splurge every single penny we earn to play it...

Ah the interwebs.

*edit* When I get the scan your system page, it gives a warning to install something, and when I click to install it, it refreshes the page which takes awhile, but then instead of installing something, it gives a popup box about windows installer or something and gives details inside it about different options like slash commands and stuff, and then a button to close it at the bottom...  I click to scan, and it just sits there and acts like it's scanning, but I think is doing nothing.  It's been "scanning" for over an hour. lol

First the site was down just about all day on the first day of the announcement for tester sign-ups, which they should have been prepared for a large overwhelming response. Second, I finally get to the sign-up page and I'm getting the same problem some others are getting. I click "continue" after filling out all my info, and I get kicked back to the "terms and agreement" page...which I checked the box to agree with every time! If it's this hard to just sign-up for the possibility to test, how bad will it be when people get accepted and try to download the game? I don't think I should have to go through a system reconfiguring just to sign up...maybe for actual testing, but not signing up. So if that's what it takes, I guess I'll sit this one out. Good luck to all those who signed up successfully, I hope you get accepted!

I love Bioware but  ithink they just got a big rude awakening and slap in the face, and ego buster, if you will and any other cliches I can think of.

Entering the MMO space was not as easy as they assumed I an guessing. I am hoping they learn from this experience and do better going forward.

Nope. I guess it was just luck for you. Oh well... I am stuck in the endless "agree to terms" too.

its worse then that, it will lock out your display name and kick you back to the start. I've lost 2 username options already.

I was finally able to sign up! I was having the same problems every one else was reporting.

It seemed to me that, even though it says only certain fields are required, it let me proceed when I entered something in EVERY field. This includes Address 2 and additional phone. One note though, it did make me do the system scan twice for some reason. The second time it accepted it though.

Anyway, this is how I got signed up. Good luck to everyone else!

Marcus

Nope. Doesn't work either.

My guess it, it has nothing to do with changes of setting or procedures whatsoever.

First it didn't worked for me, just get stucked with accept terms every time.

But I clicked on "My Account" management and scrolled down. There is a button called Update. (Next to System Specs and above Contact Information) I pressed the button (in IE Compatability mode) and yeah it worked for me!

Hope that this will help someone else.

This is exactly what happens to me.

Perhaps a little melodramatic here, but if they can't even get a simple web form to work it doesn't inspire too much faith I'm sorry to say.

*edit* I just got this in my email 4 times;

There was no talk of a system scan or whatever.... Very odd. My account hasn't been updated at all according to the "My Account" page.

Hey folks, I encountered two of the problems listed above and fixed them both:

If you're stuck in the endless loop of accepting the terms and entering personal information, your cookies aren't lasting. I went into Firefox's settings and changed the "keep cookies until" option from "they expire" to "I close Firefox." That fixed it. The website, for some reason, sets your cookies to expire after like five minutes.

As for the scan, I could not for the life of me get it to work in Firefox, but IE does it just fine. I think. It's still going and it's been ten minutes. :)

Kind of funny everyone getting excited about a beta that is probably months if not longer in the future.  This game won't be out before late 2010, if not later.  I hope they don't rush it.

I guess this is almost BioWare watching to see how the signup goes. There are so many whiners blaming the game on the site failures and the hassle to actually sign-up. And yet it's the whiners BioWare DOESN'T want. This beta is GOING to have nasty bugs that need reporting and a bunch of trouble with signing in, ect. Like the GameGuard bug with the Aion open beta. Patience is going to be key. Testers need to critic the game fairly, and not be retarded and cry cause it isn't like WoW or something else. That's what I saw in the Aion pre-selection. I can only hope the whiners from SWG don't cause too much of a commotion when they discover that SWTOR is NOT SWG's twin. This guy I know is constantly freaking over the fact that SWTOR isn't going to be like SWG or make up for the changes that occured in 2003(?). Regardless, I'm so excited for this game and you can bet I'm pre-ordering this thing the SECOND it's available for pre-order!
