Star Wars: The Old Republic News - Coruscant Unveiled!

Posted by Michael Bitton on Sep 08, 2009  | 6 comments in our forums

One major reveal that occurred at this year's Penny Arcade Expo was the confirmation of another planet to be featured in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and not just any planet, either! The heart of the galaxy, Coruscant, will be playable in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

What's the big deal about Coruscant? Producing a planet like Coruscant in an MMOG would possibly be one of the more challenging things you could do. So as a Star Wars nerd, BioWare is really outdoing themselves yet again by promising to feature Coruscant in Star Wars: The Old Republic.

You can't simply lay down some terrain, pepper it with structures and call it a day. Coruscant as a planet is almost entirely covered in cities. Imagine New York City, only planetwide. There are no bodies of water, and the only landmass that really remains would be the Manarai Mountains. If nothing else, experiencing Coruscant fully realized in an MMOG is enough reason to be excited about Star Wars: The Old Republic.

A new trailer featuring the planet was demo'd at the show, and GameSpot has a high resolution version of it up right now. Check out the high-res trailer here.

Ok, if they actually publish a "full feature" Star Wars MMO including a player economy with crafting, harvesting, auction halls, etc. AND it has fully VO NPC's AND they can make a city like Coruscant playable....they may have an actual "WoW killer" on their  hands.

Every day I become more of a believer

Does every MMO to show some interesting features have to be labeled as a "WoW killer"? That term is not even a good thing. That term has done nothing but destroy MMOs because of ignorant expectations. No game will kill WoW. WoW will eventually die of old age. If people focused more on "Is this game looking good" instead of "could this game kill WoW" then you might actually find enjoyement in games out or upcoming. In the end you're going to upset yourself.

Using the "WoW Killer" term was a bad choice of words on my part. Allow me to elaborate, when I use that term I am meaning that this game might bring a substantial market share.

This is important to me because I like well populated servers which in turn allows the tradesman in me the opportunity to form a niche market.

In addition, a game with a healthy market share almost certainly shows promise for a long lifespan with content additions and future expansions.

I don't really expect nor do I want any game to "kill" WoW.

My bad

I am willing to say that TOR will be a whole new MMORPG experience. I think that gaming companies had to wait for computers to come to terms with programmers imaginations. I believe that Bioware is going to be the next revolutionary company to take the MMO to the next market.
