Can you provide specific examples? I don't recall history quite the way you do so I can't vote at this time. I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil |

I voted no, but then I reread the question. I did NOT buy SWTOR, and the media did NOT convince me. Not sure if the wording allows for those who were not sold by the media or if its just for those who bought it for another reason.
On top of that, the only real media I saw that would have attempted to sell it as the next best thing was the comericials, and I only saw those after the game came out. |

I think the answer is obvious.Yes, a lot of people fell for the hype in which the media created.

Not just the media, but the hype around the game gave the impression that it was going to be the closest thing to a WoW-killer, since Cataclysm. I didn't really buy into it 100%, but I did feel like maybe there would be something to it, and I didn't want to miss out on the launch, if it did turn out to be a big hit.. in spite of my better judgement, after just a few hours of the beta, though ah, what the hell, it's only $60.
..D'oh! When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world. |

I voted no: reason: well i watched some videos and relized that swtor is just another shitty world of warcraft clone, just with voice acting so I got into a 2 day weekend beta later and relizes my assumption was true, and cancelled my pre-order, to this day I still haven't bothered with this game, it should have been a single player title, its not fit to be called a mmorpg. Just my 2 cents. Media and fanboys overhype stuff, so I hold back till I play it myself. I am waiting for PSO2 which i'll play because 1: it looks a hell of alot more intersting than swtor EVER did in videos I have seen of it, and 2: Its PSO, I loved the first one, PSU was ok I guess other than the synthesis craps. Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either: A. Proven right (if something bad happens) or B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens) Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime! Currently waiting for: Phantasy Star Online 2 |

I might try PSO 2, do you know when that comes out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-IIn-DG-c Try to argue this please. Oh also if you quote me and it's to argue my point, if I don't respond it means I haven't been corrected by you and/or I haven't seen it. Remember I don't mind admitting I am in the wrong. Take care :D |

Please leave polling to the professionals. The entire premise of your question is flawed and slanted to lead to the same answer. MMOs played:SWG,NGE,Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online,Eve, Star Wars the Old Republic. |

A short amount of beta play sold me. Not having fun after three weeks sold me on unsubbing. Then I took an arrow to the knee, so I started back on Skyrim with a Khaajit thief. |

i voted i loved beta so i bought it. But truth it it was star wars and bioware, so i had pre ordered before that. the media opinion had nothing to do with why i bought the game. im loving it also. As for the way the question was worded , i tend to think its looking for the answer that the only reaosn a person would buy tor is because the media made them do it. Truth is i dont belive the media was that high on tor, not nearly as high on tor as they are on gw2 . |

I voted no. I was aware of this game but I don't recall anyone saying it was the 2nd coming. I've never played a Bioware game and I only played the WoW trial. I bought it and what sold me was the change from a pure fantasy setting, it has no elves and my friend and brother are both playing it. Honestly, I've never seen an MMO with this much story and I guess I don't have the emo baggage to make me hate it from the get-go. Do people still buy the hype after all this time? It's just a game and I'm sure we'll all do this again when TERA and GW2 launch. There is NO miracle patch. 95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch. Hope is not a stategy. |

No.
I played, even though I figured i would not like it, due to friends that I played SWG and some other games with were playing...I also was not playing anything at the time, so I figured no biggy...
I thought the story aspect was ok, would of been nice if it meant anything, the mesh of single player and mmo did not work, but I got my money worth and will be cancelling before I get billed again...I was trying to 'wait and see', but I don't think any patches or content are going to fix it's flaws, and they seem to think it is good as is and needs just more of the same...Putting in new stuff, while old stuff stays broken, I did expect a lot more support for problems, with the money spent, and the huge launch...That was/is disappointing, no matter if you are staying or not.
The biggest guild supporters we had rushed to 50, one complained a ton and was annoying and quit well before the time to pay, and the other that got me to play just went MIA...Both bought the $150 collectors edition and were hyped on the game...Pretty sad that I went into it thinking I would hate it and probably got more out of it than them....I have to treat it as a RPG, more than a MMO.
I got my money worth, and I think it will probably stabalize around 750k to 1 Million, doubt it grows, as it stands now, and unless they do a major direction change imo.

Right now Hulu and Cartoon network and several other channels are shoving it down my throat. Will try it when they will allow users to try the game for free.

I was gonna play SWTOR anyway just because I was ready to get away from elves and dwarves. I seriously cannot believe how many times that same damn setting keeps getting trotted out. In beta I found the game exceeded my expectations by a mile. I hadn't been that hooked on a MMO...ever. And I was there when UO launched. So I'm still in in the game and have gotten two other people hooked(working on a third). SWTOR gets the basics right: lightsaber and blaster combat along with a innovative tradeskill system. The story element is more of a bonus. |

Even though I'm not a huge Star Wars or sci-fi fan, a few gameplay videos and articles from what feels like forever ago (must have been back in 2008ish) got me pretty excited. Then a LOT of time passed and I guess I just lost interest. Factor in the emergence of GW2--a game that, based on everything seen thus far, looks like it will appeal to my personal MMO desires much more--and I decided to hold off and not purchase SW. I intended to beta test it, but I was fully engrossed in Skyrim at the time. I don't have time to devote the necessary attention to more than one MMO-like game at a time. The timing just wasn't right. |
