So.. what this states... is that they've already lost roughly 300,000 customers out of the 2 million copies that were sold?

First MMO launch ? most MMOs have about 1/2 retention rate.

But they weren't paid for until the game released.

Some were, some weren't. The point is, they count those as sales nonetheless.

fixed for you

What's your point?

Generated 1.7 million ACTIVE subscribers.  ACTIVE.   You see that word there?  ACTIVE.

doesn't say currently active.. people can spin things all they want.. they had 1.7 million total active subscribers over the course of the month.. does it mean there is currently 1.7? who knows? is there less? who knows? is there more? who knows

Currently active is redundant.  Try finding the defintion of active... you'll be pleasantly surprised.

fixed for you.. were does it say has or currently has active or has retained or anything like that?

Yep.

No mention of current subscribers. No wonder Bioware has been completely silent since they bragged about 1 million registrations.

Should be obvious why the official forums are filled with the dwindling player base screaming for server merges and transfers if they won't talk about the current active subscribers.

What a disaster.

... the number they're quoting is current... a little over a month from the launch date is basically yesterday...

Generated does not mean retained.  I could "generate" 5 million subscribers over 3 years, but only have 200 active subscribers currently.

The report is worded very ambiguously.  First they say it's for Q4 2011 (Dec. 31st), then they mention the "a little over one month" figure.  I'm not really sure what they mean, but knowing how companies report to investors, they are probably wording the report so that it shows them in the most favorable light.

i think the key word you highlighted was "Active" now if it only said generated 1.7 million subscribers then I would agree with you... but it does say active so your reaching to find something wrong with the statement.

Also just because some people hate the game doesn't mean the majority do, people seem to think their opinion is the only one that counts and if they don't like something then everyone else shouldn't like it also...

I have my proof, show yours. I'll decide to bust out laughing with the games you choose to show proof in your statement.

No they had over 2 million units the first month, after Jan 20th the numbers diped down to 1.7 million, so from Jan 20th till now they have 1.7 million active subs.

2 million people where subed from Dec. 20th to Jan 20th 300k+ did not resub after the first free month but 1.7 million did.

The number are as of now.

Yes. That would be a record retention rate for an MMO after the first month. No MMO has had close to that percentage of their initial subs re-up for another month...85% retention is unheard of in the industry.

The real trick is actually getting subs to increase after the first 3 months, very few MMOs have done this.

All I got from this is they sold 2 million copies... And there was 1.7 million people who used their free 30 days. I highly doubt there is 1.7 million paying subs at this very moment. Don't forget you need to setup a sub in order to use the 30 free days.

This.

If the numbers were counting subscribers in the first month, it wouldn't have dropped below their box sales.

For there to be a 300,000 subscriber drop, it has to have happened AFTER the subs kicked in.

This 1.7 million number is definitely after the subs kicked in.  If it was for the first month it would be 2 million active subscribers.

Basic logic.

If they sold 2 million copies, then 2 million people got the free 30 days.  What you posted makes no sense.

How would 300,000 of the box sales not get their 30 days?

Good PR/Attorneys are worth their weight in gold...or spin anyway.

"Generated" includes dead accounts. It doesn't matter if it's active now just as long as it was generated.

You could always read the article:

"said Chief Executive Officer John Riccitiello. "Star Wars: The Old Republic is developing a committed community of players with more than 1.7 million active subscribers and growing." "

Denial is the first stage.

they aren't talking about dead accounts. they are talking about ACTIVE FREAKING SUBSCRIPTIONS.

So 300k people didn't use their free month?!?  WTF are you talking about?    It's pretty obvious that 2 million bought the game and after the free 30 days was up 1.7 million subscribed for another month.  Learn to read
