Shit Happens!!

OP  12/15/13 12:29:22 AM#1

I just logged in for the first time in several months. It says I have to activate my character, which I've done before. But now my character is in red and I get this message when I hover my mouse over it:

"Character Requires Rename Origin Shard: Starbreaker 12"

What does that mean? Why do I need to rename that character that I've had for at least a year? What's "Starbreaker 12" mean?  Did I just get screwed over?

It is either a combination or because of:

-you haven't logged in since the server merges and your character and requires a name change due to duplication from the merge.

-your account was aged enough to wipe the character names from old unused accounts to free then up for future and current players. If all your characters have to do this then this is likely the reason.

I'm not sure if that is an old server name but seems to refer to the name of the shard itself.

I've played since the server merges, that was a very long time ago. It's only been three or four months since I played.

If I recall.  I remember reading something a couple months ago saying they were freeing up names.  Those who were playing or subbed didn't have to worry.  I hope this isn't the case for you.  But, I'm worried it might be.  Best of luck getting this squared away.

They emailed everyone saying character renames were going to happen.

But hey, more fun to scream "greedy dev" and yell about how awful TOR is, amirite?

Here are the exact rules for Character Name Renewal:

If you are a Free-to-Play player:
  • If your character is below level 10, and you have not played that character in the last 60 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • If your character is below level 30, and you have not played that character in the last 120 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • Characters level 30 and above will be unaffected.
If you are a Preferred Status player:
  • If your character is below level 10, and you have not played that character in the last 90 days, your character will be flagged for rename
  • If your character is below level 30, and you have not played that character in the last 180 days, your character will be flagged for rename.
  • Characters level 30 and above will be unaffected.
If you are or become a Subscriber:
  • You will be unaffected by this

This is the biggest BS I've ever seen. I don't know why they would do this.

I dunno man I normaly bash swtor but if you can't get your toon above 30 to secure the name then thats your fault. Their rule has been the same for a long time. Its not as if its hard to get to 30 oooo!

You should check your emails I don't even play the game anymore but had countless emails leading to this name wipe that I think they gave people fair warning.

Plus are you really that petty that your this bothered about a game you obviously have not played for months

They do this to free up names from accounts that are not active, rift did the same thing, I think AoC went a step further and actually deleted lower level toons.

But it they sent out a lot of emails letting people know about this should have read them.

So just checking here but did you try to rename your toon the same name?  Crazy thought I know but some just are so fast to jump up and down screaming they miss the obvious.

Not only ^this, but also if you visited this very site any day in the few weeks leading up to the wipe, you would have found countless discussions on it to get involved in.

looking at my mailbox I see that they sent two. One on October 13th and an additional one on October 23rd so I suppose that should be enough warning.

Because people move on, if they don't come back, there's no reason for them to keep a name they don't use.
