Indeed. The excitement of launch and all the talk about a galaxy of extra planets seems a long time ago now.

Sites like Darthater and that little webshow with the squeaky-voiced presenter are pretty much just retweeters of the EA marketing department.

My post wasn't a criticism of you - it was a critique of the the interviewer thouygh. If film reviewers reviewed films like game reviewers reviewed games, they'd soon be sacked.

Wasn't Gabe responsible for developing most of TOR's raid content? I remember reading interviews with him on Darth Hater about the different difficulty settings, loot distribution, etc. |

To the current interview by the OP, I feel sorry for how badly he trying to force a positive spin on SWTOR. He uses the word "like" so much I feel as though I'm listening to a 12 year old girl who is like so much into SWTOR that it is just like oh my god! like you can do so much it's like fun. Like really! Like if you haven't seen the OP's video then you are like not keeping up with promises! Did I ever tell you about our F2P? It's going to be like so awesome! Want a nice understanding of life? I'm amused by their assumption that the public is permanently grotesquely stupid. If anyone remembers Joe Isuzu, that should be their new spokeman. You want to throw away your money developing something stupid, go ahead. |

The site should be called darthcarebears.com That site is nothing but uber carebears praising tor and if you disagree with them they report you for trolling lol. As you can tell with the interview they went under the desk for it. God forbid they ask gabe hey wheres the open world pvp? insted theyre laughing about ilum? It was his creation and him going prepared to be amazed and all this crap. They can suger coat it all they like on that site but the truth is tor is losing subs already lost 600k gone f2p before a year. Well soe and game sites then praised the nge to lol. The truth always prevails..... |

Originally posted by Tayah I stand corrected. Still, the game is having a fair amount of success (More than Rift, Tera, Aion, and TSW), so there is no reason for a fan site moderator to randomly accost the developers and become testy in the middle of a game convention. Originally posted by Souldrainer I wouldn't put much hope in SWTOR gaining traction in Asia. Whether or not the SW IP is popular in China is irelevant. Currently SWTOR has 3 servers in Australia. (Wich are pretty sick according to Tor Status). Australia is kind of backwards in its transoceanic internet wiring. The Asian-Pacific servers get god awful pings for anyone trying to play them if they aren't in Austalia or New Zealand. Singapore has unplayable ping times (an offically supported area) the pings are unplayable from the Phillppines and Indonesia as well. People trying to play SWTOR from Japan discovered that the pings were beter to the US West Coast then Australia. Furthermore, people often poke fun at WoW for opening in China, but to be truthful, it ain't easy. You have to first create a secondary pay system for internet cafes. (granted the new FTP model may help Tor in that regard, but they would have to come up with different cash shop for China, they can't afford to spend a month's salary on a speeder.) Also you have to negotiate with the Chineese government which is both authoritarian and corrupt in one tough package. Also, the game would have to be translated into Mandarian. That's alot of translating to do with or without voice-overs. Considering the voice overs are supposed to be a big part of the game, kind of odd not to have them to begin with. (Spanish and Portugese countries don't seem to be so keen on being suck a large lingual group ignored by Bioware.) It doesn't end there though. Then the Chineese censors have to evaluate the game and anything they object to has to be taken out. Then the modified game has to be resubmited for evaluation again and again till it is approved. (WoW had to remove all skeltons from its game, not cheap to do.) Then as a eveloper, you have to create systems that enables the Chineese government to snoop on the chat windows. Bejing doesn't want a game cordinating protests a la the London riots. If you do all the above, then you get to invest in expensive mainland Asian servers. The problem here is the game is now FTP. The option now is nothing or a deluge. Opening a FTP game for a billion more people requires enormous server infrastructure expenditures. Because there is no sub fee and only reduced cash shop fees, the expenditure is unlkely worth the increased revenue. Long story short, don't pin SWTOR's hopes on China. There's just little to no chance of it happening. |
