Well you actually have to have a portfolio of games that people want to play to for this to work. :) |

Ah, the Station Pass... Sony got that wrong the first time the did it and it really helped to hurt EQ & EQ2. Now they have it right, but it's 7-years later than it should have been... I have less faith that EA would get it right than Sony.
Also, I don't think they'll get Funcom to sign on. The Secret World is doing well and not showing any particular early-die off like TERA which dropped (as predicted) like a hot rock. (NOTE: Not hater prediction, just history-- 45-to-15 contraction in Korea and a 10-to-3 contraction in Japan. Contraction was expected by anyone not a raving lunatic fanboy.)
Plus EA is their publisher, not their owner and, quite likely, doesn't have much of anything to say about it. Funcom could always find a new publisher once this deal expires if EA got froggy with them.
But credit for at least trying. It's not a bad idea. I just don't see why Funcom would be willing to be bled. TSW is working quite well for them. Plus SWTOR, while it doesn't seem like it will every justify it's hype or investment, hasn't completely hit the fan yet. These are your US/European/Oceania play percentages for MMOs:
♦ World of Warcraft (43.7%) ♦ Star Wars: The Old Republic (6.2%) ♦ Aion (3.7%) ♦ The Secret World (3.6%) ♦ Eve Online (3.1%) ♦ Metin 2 (2.7%) ♦ The Lord of the Rings Online (2.2%) ♦ Other (34.9%)
Things will change when GW2 hits the market. The issue then becomes what will it do to this MMO player mix? I think, but certainly can't prove, that SWTOR and Aion will take the biggest hits. The logic behind it is that Aion has no commitment so people can come and go as they please and with SWTOR many of them are now just hanging out while waiting for something better to come along because they're tired of what's out there.
But we'll see... |

I could see this happening with the whole environment thing. My prediction is that the announcement of the F2P model or "New Ways to Play" will be given out before August 31st. Save for the waffles.

That's a little like what happened with the Station Pass from Sony. That $30 a month Station Pass was decided upon because they couldn't bear the thought of EQ and EQ2 sharing too much revenue stream so they ended up fracturing their own game market player base, causing lower retention in both games.
Had they been more reasonable, since both IPs were still very strong, it might of worked at a better compromise price. But they didn't and WoW kicking them in the teeth every day didn't help, either.
I often wonder what would have happened with WoW if Sony had sold EQ and EQ2 as a combined property for $15 a month... Would we be talking about SWTOR being an EQ2 clone instead? EQ2 in space...? Who knows... |

If this was a trend for the industry it would be a damn good one for the consumer. |

A bet does not have to be for money. Like I said, it is a wager of a tangible or intangible good or service. It does not even require an EXPLICIT wager. Reputation is, in fact, a common wager that is not explicitly defined in the wager.
His bet was, clearly to anyone paying attention and not trying to cover for a comprehension failure, an implicit reputation wager. A counter of status. Getting it right increases status. Getting it wrong diminishes status.
That you don't get it, makes you wrong, not me. |

Originally posted by Airtaee Not really because the games would need to have the same client engine, witch is not the case, or rewrite a common launcher meaning they would not have wasted time adding environment choice in this one.
If this not a bug and I'm pretty sure it is indeed a bug, then the choice of environment will be to either go to cash play servers or normal ones, or somehing tied to the subs model. |
