Well without testing, according to THIS thread on the forums you can transfer the item but the appearance changes depending on the faction, which is why you don't see that mask on a republic character.  Even if he's wearing it it'll look different.

Yeah, it's CLEARLY  a major flaw in the game that you can't have Jedis running around with Sith Warrior Hannibal Lechter masks.  

You serious, guy?  Sorry, at some point, someone had to step in and say "You know what?  You'd never see this kind of thing in the Star Wars universe, so you won't see it in our game, either."  Jedis should look like Jedis, and Sith should look like Sith.  It's pretty simple, really.

And they can wear robes in this game, too.  They just happen to be darker robes, not earth-toned like the Jedi.  One thing that would have been really cool in this game, albeit extremely difficult to do, was if you could switch sides all the way.  Like have a Jedi choose to become Sith once he goes Dark Side V or something.  And vice versa for Sith or imperial side.  Unfortunately, in a game that is relies so heavily on story and standard themepark content, it would simply be too difficult to pull off for reasons of balance.
