Correct me if i'm wrong, but in this timeline?  Is the "republic" in control.. wouldn't the "smuggler" be a bad guy and NOT part of the republic, on the side of the jedi?  Am i wrong on this?  Sounds fishy to me..

If you watch the first 2 Timeline Lore Videos you will get your answer.

I think the only thing really confusing to me was the thread title.

The republic isn't in control of most of the universe. This is before the destruction of the old Sith empire.

Sorry i meant "republic" not "jedi" oops!  I played the first two games, i thought that a "smuggler" was evil by nature, and a few had a soul .. my bad.

It's the matter of point of view.

View A) Is based on the fact that most people who saw Start Wars felt Han Solos character (smugler) is good. There fore when desiding Classes Bioware trusted this enough to but Smuglers, strongly associated Han Solo, on the good side.

View B) Is based on assumption that Smugler is a bad guy because he works against the rules created to cherish common good.

View C) It depends who wrotes the history. Smugler could be a hero who saved the cause or the most hunted terrorist in universe. Usually winners write the history. So it is easier to be a hero if you smugled for those who won the war.

And the list of views go on and on... wonderfull how complex world can be... Feel free to add more views...

Just because you are unique does not mean you are special

Also consider that criminals and criminal organizations thrive better in free societies like the Republic, than under oppressive totalitarian regimes like the Sith Empire.  It's really in their own best interest to work for the Republic, and even democracies aren't above dealing with shady people/groups when it serves their interests.

Just like someone above said, Han Solo was one of the good guys, and he was a smuggler.

What it seems to me, is that smuggler's are "the good guys", but they have to make choices, which might seem bad in certain situations. Like, morally / ethically wrong & bla bla, but still work for the good guys... Yes, yes.
