After searching far and wide i came across this little gem yesterday, and i have to say i have not played a game with as many class-customization options since Pre-Cu SWG. The crafting system is so deep comparing to any other game ive played on the market. When i play Ryzom i get flashbacks of playing Pre-CU star wars galaxies.

I'm hooked! and probably will be for a while. Amazing sandbox game.

I only wish i had found this game sooner! :)

Is combat targetted like EQ, WOW, etc?

Former xFire user... I only wanted a game tracker and messenger, not a screenshot taker, video recording, broadcasting piece of bloatware.

Ryzoms combat system is somewhat unique, You do have to target things like wow,eq, and Pre-CU swg.... But what really makes the combat system is the fact that you can actually design your own combat abilitys..

The drawbacks and effects, You can basically customize the mechanics of your skills/abilitys. So for instance one Casters healing spell may work differently than another casters healing spell..

welcome to Atys.

I have been an off and on Ryzom player since its release. My issue is that i just can't get beyond how shallow the tutorial is when it comes to the full game. Meaning (at least back when i played) stanzas confused the hell out of me.

When i left the island of noobs i felt lost, very little direction. I always felt compelled to focus on all aspects of play. Which i think just burned me out. But how can i as a new player find my place in a game thats really been around for almost 7 years ?

I want to love Atys, i want to stay in the game longer then a couple of months, but i just find myself drifting away after 60 days or so.

If i come back to Ryzom it will be my 5th attempt.

Did you try the 21 day trial before you posted this?

at least then you can judge>>> for free<<< weather 10 a month is worth it.

I think the tutorial has been very helpful, there are NPC's wich offer quest chains on Noob isle that basicly guide you through all aspects of building your character, using Stanzas, And even how to craft...

Also remember this is a Sandbox.... They do not hold you by the hand and guide you through the game like blizzard does with wow.... Get out there and explore, choose a path and stick to it..... Remember ! The jack of all trades - is a master at none.... The more you focus on something you want to do the better you will get at it, If you focus on everything it will take alot longer to master everything :) Do 1 thing at a time.

Hmm, pidgeon-holing my opinions of how the stanza system works and the crummy tutorial into a WoW kiddie, will only put me on the defensive along with any other self respecting MMO hobbyist.

That aside, i know dang well doing every single possible leveling route is not a good way to play a Skill based MMO. More or less i felt compelled to do so so i could be self sufficient. At the times i did play there were very few guilds recruiting new players. Practically forcing those who are serious into being a jack of all trades.

Maybe guilds now are interested in new players but back then that was not really an option.

On a side note, i am very interested in coming back to Ryzom, i am just not willing to go hardcore into it again until i figure out some issues i have with it.

The Ryzom community is humbled everyone but the one massive guild on kami side will take you whether your casual or hardcore.

Edit: Wait... How does the stanza system pigeon hole you?

You need to re-read what i said, i was referring to the guy who basically called me a WoW kiddie for not understanding or expecting a well made tutorial that included how to manage stanzas.

Yes its in the game, no its not very in depth.

Not once did i imply i needed to be lead around by the nose. I just feel that stanzas are a very integral aspect of the game and its minutia tutorial only added to my confusion.

SO yes please re-read what i posted.

Did not mean to offend, WoW has just dumbed mmorpgs down so much that most people expect to be led by the nose.

Have you done any of the stuff on noob island, There are decent write up's of how stanzas Work.

I pretty much have the combat ones figured out, once you get the drift of how they work it kind of all falls into place.. I did the extracting tutorial and it gave a decent amount of information on how they worked.. After I had read the help window i went out and toyed around with the system making different Abilities with different stanzas and saw how they worked. From there i got the jist of how they work.

At first i as confused and the system look super complex comparing to anything i had used before but as i said... It only took a few hours of play to get the jist of how they work...

ALSO :

Although I have not used this guide, It could be helpful there is some information on how stanzas work there aswell:

I am not currently playing the game, although i am giving it serious consideration. At work atm so i cant play even if i wanted to right now.

I just wanted the tutorials to be more fleshed out and user friendly, i found them archaic and obtuse. Maybe in my old age i need a more constructive and in depth explanation.

Anyhow, i did'nt really take offense, i am just highly against what WoW has done to the short sighted developers ever since its release.

On a side note, the last time i played Ryzom i found alot of the long term players were aloof and kinda stayed away from associating with newbs. i hope that this has ceased, seeing as how this games longevity is based on active subscriptions.

Welcome to Atys Kerigar-Karg!

Funny thing, it took me way too long to find this game as well.

Although I risk repeating a sentiment expressed often on this forum, the community in Ryzom is extremely helpful.  Please don't hesitate to ask questions regarding Stanzas...or anything that has you stumped for that matter in Region or Universe chat.

If you find yourself moving to the Jungle after the starter island, I'm part of a growing guild of new Ryzom players that'd be happy to lend a hand (that includes those that are trying the game for the 5th time! )

It's just about Spring on the planet Atys...and we could always use your help in pushing back the invading Kitin hordes!

I only started Ryzom a short time ago. I wont disagree that the tutorial was not as indepth as some. However, I found the community very helpful. I have grouped more in this game despite its small population than in many better known titles.

Ryzom certainly is a gem as the op says.  I enjoy figuring out how things work and the stanza system is pure genious.  So is crafting in general.  Even with the tutorials on Silan (newb island) it can be daunting to figure out how everything works.  Ask questions in the Universe chat channel and people always reply.  I have even met alts on Silan who just run around asking if new players need help with anything.

While it's possible it could vary greatly based on what times you play, I've seen the opposite of this during my trial over the last few weeks. There's always at least one or two people helping out on universal chat, I've had several go into length PM conversations with me about some of the stuff that the tutorial doesn't cover (which, admittedly, I think the tutorial quests do a great job explaining what they do cover, but they don't cover enough), and they're always willing to hop onto their newbie-island alts to help get you through the harder quests. But I usually find this type of playerbase interaction in any small-playerbase game, it's one of the few good things about a small community. :p

That said, the trial hooked me and I'll definitely be subscribing to see some more of the world. I still haven't gotten around to trying out the Ryzom Ring aspect of the game, which is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most, but overall it's pretty good. Also, while the amount of devs is understandably teensy weensy, they seem to be pretty active. I've seen one in particular around about every other time I get online.
