Playing it for a week now but i havent had such fun in an MMO for years! The world is a world, not a theme park, the harvesting is outstanding, the crafting is nice and complex. This game makes so many things slightly different that a completely new feeling and atmosphere is created.
Just sad that the graphics are outdated. Still i dont care much. It is more intresting than Vanguard and that stanza thing is just awesome once you got behind it some. A true gem between all the mainstream MMO's and i hope word spreads and more people like myself dig this gem out. It has its flaws (the one or other crash and weird combat behaviour) but so far none of this breaks it for me. The quests on the starting island are fun and people have been friendly and helpful all over.
looking forward to see some of u in Ryzom!

Sam.

I hate it when I see this. No offence to you, Sam, personally, but this is why this game went bankrupt once already. Most average people have no idea this game even exists, let alone how fantastic it is. That is part of the reason that the community is so fantastic, but you need more people to make more money. I hope the new management, now that things are pretty well tamped back into place, takes a page out of the marketing book and drops some money on some ads. Even a banner here would probably help.

I agree just one Banner AD across a couple MMO forum sites would really increase the population.
Virtually noone outside of sandbox fans know this game is even still running, it's a shame really.

MetalHead, I have never written a signature, but I feel strongly about this; would you be annoyed if I created a signature strikingly similar to yours?

Go for it buddy

It would be nice if Ryzom advertised more.

It would also be nice if they updated their Web site. It's looking really dated. It's shallow, but people judge all kinds of things by their "cover" whether it's books, games or even people. If the Ryzom Web site looks like it's from the mid-90s, then people aren't going to be confident about the quality of the game.

Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: GW2, ArcheAge

Honestly when I first saw the Website back in august '08 I thought the game looked like a Crappy f2p mmo.

Only thing that makes you believe Ryzom is still running are the patch notes posting on the first page.

Speaking of patches any news on the next one?

Firstly, thank you.

I think the problem here is that most of the companies that create games such as this are developed by people that really love gaming, but do not have the financial backing of the larger publishers because they are either unknown or the game concept is untested. We need to remember the moneybags do not understand games. So, even when they create a game like Ryzom, they simply do not have the capital to market or the business experience to know how to use what marketing they have effectively.

I think the only true "sandbox" game that has been a real success is EVE.

And then, even if people do play the game, many of them do not like it for various reasons, most of which have to do with polish, which is a direct result of lack of money. For example, people complain about Darkfall (which, I will grant that there are many "haters" out there who want only to tarnish the name) because of bugs and lower quality graphics, but they did start the project years ago, on their own, with very little money. They did what they could. But people cannot look past the problems the game does have to see a gem for serious pvpers.

The best thing we can do is tell people we know about games like this that we hear about. Word of mouth is always underrated, and it is the best thing we can do for them.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true — you know it, and they know it." —Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007

WTF? No subscription fee?

This is an industry wide issue. People do not understand that Game Development and Production are very different jobs, that require totally different skills, and tasks.

Developers think that they are the best person to produce the game, because they created it, and know it best. This turns out to not be true most of the time, and as such causes the game to go under (or just do poorly). Getting  a good publisher can make all the difference.

Has a few teasers, but i doubt that's all they're up to, u don't need 2 months (even on your own) to change an interface...

But that's all we hear so far, hehe. I'm just glad we're getting a blog.

So, what should a "modern" Website look like?

I´m just asking, maybe someone "important" reads it.

Should it be more "flashy"? in both senses of the word ;)

Or less?

You can find all things needed to know on the game on it, so what else should there be?

Can you give me an example of an MMOs site that does it "better"?

For, those I know aren´t very much different, despite havening more "modern" Games to back them up.

Just for a randomly picked example: www.lotro-europe.com/ does seem to have some problems with their German.

The nice "Bilbos Birthday" Box in the middle right,.... ouch.  Someone switched the sentences parts around.

And frankly, I don´t see that much of a difference to ryzoms site. Only there are no LINKS to the community, or goodies, or other fun stuff.

So, what should a "cool" Website look like and do for you?

Flashy for the sake of being flashy, no. The flash should be kept to a minimum. It should feel cohesive, thought out, designed. It shouldn't look like a crappy mid-90s site that was slapped together as an afterthought. Show off the game a bit more. Make it look like you at least care about making a good first impression.

A couple examples:

Jumpgate Evolution has a decent looking site that's not over-the-top flashy.

Star Trek Online also has a nice theme to work with. Good use of background graphics. Everything important is there, but not cluttered.

Reading this thread  i just found the game i was looking for, i guess.

The features you guys pointed are sooo amazing. Ryzom seems to have all the stuff that other mmos lacks.

I'm downloading it now to try, i hope i enjoy this as much as some of  you do, i love imersive games one of the reasons i love LOTRO is the imersion and well built world, Ryzom seems to have it in a higher lvl !!!

I hope this game sucks me in hehe

I've been jumping from mmo to mmo, kinda tired of it....  (i play LOTRO but in a slow paece, very casually)

Thanks for all the point of views you guys wrote here , if people in-game are that helpful and friendly i guess i will enjoy it even more.

Yes, theres a three week unlimited free trial, however, the newbie area of Silan isnt really reflective of the game as a whole, there are a lot of quests there to introduce you t your ryzom abilities.

Edit: Beaten :D

F2P/P2P excellent thread.

21 day free trial Tanzie, no limitations except time.

If you try out ryzom: it has a steep learning curve, READ the tutorial texts on the island you arrive on, very important xD

If you miss something or have questions, just ask in uni chat, awesome community, usually you'll get 3/4 people replying within a few minutes.

EDIT: Damned, why didn't i see there was another page to this thread xD

Playing it for a week now but i havent had such fun in an MMO for years! The world is a world, not a theme park, the harvesting is outstanding, the crafting is nice and complex

Ryzom's realistic mob AI and seasons really do make the world feel alive.

And it's harvesting and crafting is easily the best of any mmo I've played.

It's a heavily underated game. One reason you may not have been told how good it is.....

Ryzom is in excellent shape now and still improving, but for a few years it languished with a less than spectacular newbie area that really undersold the game. I tried it and even putting aside the terrible lag, the game looked stupendously boring just based on the newbie area. I didn't even bother staying out the whole duration of the free trial.

Second time I tried it, with the new newbie area, was a wholly different experience.

Even with its dated graphics, there's nothing quite like Ryzom on the market - and with that market saturated with EQ clones, just about anyone will find Ryzom a breath of fresh air :)

Downloading the game for trial.

I am so tired of being pigeon holed in what I have to do and especially what I have to be.

The way I look at it; Ryzom has more people to interact with while sandboxing than Oblivion does...

I'm almost two weeks into the trial and I must say I love the game!

So far I've met a lot of people, trekked all across Atys, done a lot of crafting (heavy armor 85, jewels 78 other stuff about 50), a lot of digging (lakes 95), participated in hunting parties and moss gathering (twohanded melee 101, healing 60).

I love the fact that I can be whoever I want without the game telling me what I must do. Although I often like to solo I think it's great that most things is so much better to do in groups. The community is the best I have found in a MMORPG, very helpful and mature. I haven't seen much of the PvP-guild drama that everybody keeps telling me exists.

Thanks Joneyentee and Tyneetryk for making Ryzom such a welcoming place!

Well, the wife and I are installing as we speak.  We always play together, but this will be our first "sandbox" since SWG launched.  I'm looking forward to experiencing Ryzom, and I hope the wife likes it as well :)

One quick bit of advice, if I may be so bold...read all of the Mission texts on the starter island.  It can get pretty frustrating pretty quick if you don't, unless you are one of those players that just "gets it" right out of the gate.

That said...

Welcome to Atys!
