Well a lot has happened with STO the majority of it all bad and I will elaborate on this, first of all the ferengi lockbox now on the STO forums there were two camps those that liked them and thought they were a good thing on the basis they enabled Cryptic to make money and the camp I am in that hates them for they are a complete emersion breaker in every part of the game. Now the community in general I think its fair to say has no problem with them making money its just we would rather have a better game and more things to spend our now Zen points on, but it seems our ideas have fallen on deaf ears at Cryptic.
There seems to be culture of adding things to the game that will ultimately alienate the community at large and current long time players like myself, I have been a fan of Star Trek ever since I was a child and when this game first came out and I started playing it I was so enthusiastic but that faded when I reached the level cap for then it was there it became apparent they had not thought out at all what players would do once they got there, now at the moment the current diet is STFs and PVE and PVP which was a system that was broken right from the get go and now the addition of fleet starbases and new PVE actions you would think I would have something to be happy about now right?
Wrong the current season update has not addressed any of the major issues that currenlty exist in STO among some of those issues are the lack of updated avatar customization across the board and the lack of new content that actually makes sense within the story arc in STO. These are just a couple of those issues for there are too many to list all of them, the last one I want to mention is the huge number of currencies in STO its rediculous one of which has been braught back via the fleet bases the Merits just under a different name now what gives with that? Do Cryptic believe that adding more currencies help improve game play????
When I read that this latest season update was not going to do anything about the terrible crafting system I was so disappointed for at the moment the system is not relevant to the game on top of all that there are the dilithium costs for additional materials which are not needed since you pay for your item via data samples you gather and schematics you have to replicate so yet another pointless add on they put in season 5 I believe.
All games no matter what type have to fulfil one basic requirement it has to be fun and for me STO falls far short of that at the moment and thats a real shame for me especially since am a Trek fan, the crooks of it is the game feels stale and stagnent and compared to other mmos in the market place this is not at the top of the list at all, new comers like The Secret World offer a different gaming experience and I play this mmo and I am impressed the writing is of the highest quality the game play is extremely good and above all it meets that requirement for me its fun.
Another thing that makes this particular game stand out from STO and maybe other mmos is its pushing the boundaries of the mmo experience and methodology of delivering a story and quest system along with a very robust crafting system kinda similiar to another great mmo Mine Craft. So at the moment STO is getting thrashed by the competition at the moment and regardless of the fact its based around Star Trek it has to up its game if it wants to play with the big boys, I have come to the conclusion that maybe the future of the game would be best served if it was sold to different company like Blizard,Bioware or Funcom for either of those companies are more than capable of making STO the game it should have been when it launched instead of having the feel of a really drawn out beta.
I know that comparing STO to The Secret World may seem unfair at a first glance but it is fair for that game is bringing something new to the table and at the moment STO is not doing that and what I have said here is brutualy honest but these things have to be said in relation to the game as it stands now at this moment in time.
