Atari and Cryptic Studios have announced today that the Closed Beta test for Star Trek Online has commenced!
Craig Zinkievich, Executive Producer of Star Trek Online, offers some comments on today's announcement:
"We're pleased to begin sharing our addition to Star Trek's legendary story with the public, we know fans of Star Trek, and fans of MMOs, will be incredibly impressed by what they see when they play Star Trek Online."
From what I understand lifetime and six month subscribers to Champions Online should be first into the Star Trek Online beta, so start checking your inboxes!
The original announcement can be viewed here.
Excellent news! Thank you MikeB.
Hope I've got horseshoes up my butt, cause I can't wait to check this one out.
Huge closed beta announcement? People eagerly waiting to get in? Yeah, this isn't so much play testing as advanced marketing to build hype for the game.
Any other Champions Online subscribers still waiting for notification and instructions?
I'm hoping it still comes today...
yeah im waiting also for my email from them
I'm still waiting...lifetimer here. However thay have stated that even if you are garaunteed a beta slot that you may not be in the first wave or two as they ramp up their concurrent user count. But you will eventually get in.
Surprise, surprise.
Its only a guaranteed spot in closed beta. Could get an email today, could get one on the last day of closed beta.

wont this potentially kill their champion population?
Depends how many really took lifetime subs and also if they run STO beta like CO beta you'll only be able to play once or twice a week and at certain times that day.
I hope they start pumping out those emails, I bought the mega-subscription.
well from what has been said on the boards is that they are going to rampup beta invites, But it is not going to be just the paid first. The line is long and everyone has to wait till it is thier turn. paying to get it does not make your first in line , I wish it did :)
Actually they just confirmed that those that purchased the 6 month/Lifetime for CO will be the getting in first.

We don't have an invite schedule set in stone just yet, but people who signed up for a lifetime or six-month subscription will most likely get invited to test the game first.

*keeps an eye open for that email*
I'm sure it will be in waves and I'm sure that the people who got the six month/lifetime subs will be the first to get in. After all, they want those lifetimers to buy yet another lifetime sub to STO.
I'm a Champions Lifer and my button on the STO home page just says "Closed Beta Applied". Nothing about being accepted. Hopefully I won't get forgotten :)

Actually that post is over a month old and he has since recanted that statement. However they have said that paid beta keys will be amongst the first to get in....eventually.
I'm a lifetime subber here and still no invite....so waiting patiently.
Same! I'm sure they have thousands of invites to send out, we'll be in there somewhere. We just have to be logical and be patient. *Must fight my inner Klingon urge to throw something impatiently*
This is all great and good. I have been watching what cryptic have been saying about this game and doing with it for ages now, and all I ever seem to get the sense form cryptic is that all their games about that character creation screens before you start the game and nothing more. Even with this game they just keep talking about customizing the ships with colours and stuff to suit ur needs, so here goes for bright pink ships. Its just shocking cryptic think making a character different colours or different heights or in this case ships is what the whole game is about. Being a Star trek fan as well I would expect this game to be on a next level with massive worlds, battles, combat and evertyhing else, but all I keep reading and woundering will this just be another same Cryptic game, where they put all their resourses in making the character creation screen better than the actual game.
ya but you cant really screw up the combat as long as you have the phasers torpedoes and disruptor banks, thats what eve never had, proper banked weapons and things like volley fire specials ect, eve was all auto attack and no fun
I will be laughing my butt off if this Guaranteed STO Beta access through the 6-month / Lifetime Champions Online deal was just another "Roper scam" to lure people into the 6-month / Lifetime Champion Online deals.
Start laughing, because it's the case.
I'm one of those scammed fools.
I'm not a lawyer, but I bet "most likely" is in no way legally binding.
Well, I almost fell for it too. But I luckily requested and got a full refund within two weeks after launch, when I found out what POS game CO was.
True. It's not leagally binding, but it is a scam.
Not to mention they earlier wrote that we will get first into the beta. Dont have that link now though.
Dont kid yourselves.
Mythic will be looking at the computer stats of most applicants to closed beta. This is still a business regardless of what they promised through some promotional BS.
Early closed beta will be needing high performance rigs to run the game decently. They will most likely use the lower end computers towards the end of closed beta.
If they dont get enough high end computers with the CO LT/6mth subs they they will add testers from general beta applicants.
Actually, Mythic wont bedealing with this at all, as the game is being made by CRAPtic.
They (CRAPtic) will get people that betatested for them before and they were happy with ther work. Once they let all of them in in few waves, they will slowly start letting in people from contest / CO deals / who signed to get into beta again in waves, but all groups at the same time. Most of the lifetime subscribers wont get in until a week or so of the closed beta.
Still waiting for Email as 6 month subscriber.
There population from my perspective was already dead. Haven't played it for weeks...such a boring game.
you need a 6 month subscription for one betakey? wow, that's a expensive test demo: "Beta" is a nickname for software which has passed the alpha testing stage of development and has been released to users for software testing before its official release. they should pay the tester for testing their software, they make later the cash with the product, the testers don't get paid for this important job.
invite hasnt reached my mailbox yet , im a 6 monther too
oh well hopefully they will get us in quickly
