Cryptic provides us with three exclusive peeks at Star Trek Online. Two ships or a somewhat familiar design, and one tjay shows starfleet players fighting the Borg.
Don't get me wrong, I am as much of a Star Trek fanboi as anyone could be, but come on Cripitc, I want to see in-game footage of people actually playing.
these screenshots are nice, but they all seam too cinamatic to be taken seriously.
show me some interface action, someone transfering power to the shields, etc.

Sorry pal, this game is "less Spocky and more Rocky."

For the love of God. In every Star Trek show they transfer warp power to the shields to get their collective butts out of a jam. for once in a g'damn star trek game I want to be able to do the same.
from what it sounds like that mite be an option. Some of the articles I have read about ship crew makes it sound like there will be tactical options to choose while in ship combat. and as the famous saying goes...only time will tell.
The space shots look really nice but the ground combat looks awful. Wish they could remove that part from the game. Star Trek is known for it being a sci-fi in SPACE, not on planets (altough that happened as well).

You mean it is less Star Trek and more Rocky?
Oh yeah, makes great sense for a game called STAR TREK Online.
They mentioned in one of their articles you will have to prioritize power on your ship. Although you would have to look it up to be sure. I am simply too lazy, but they keep practically every article on their website.
You can transfer shields, it's been said already. For example if your front shields are weakening you can transfer power from the other three shield areas of your ship. Those being Port, Starboard, and Aft (Stern?) shields.
From what I've read about this game my interest only grows more.
Same here. The Genre is getting overloaded with to many fantasy games and not enough alternatives. Don't get me wrong I love my fantasy, but I also love my sci-fi. I just hope they don't overly hype it.

That is not the same thing as transfering power from your weapons/engine/whatever to your shields and vice versa.
Found this video of spacecombat on youtube from pax 09 www.youtube.com/watch. Not sure if I like the interface, flying around in a mini-enterprise seems a bit weird.

Thanks Nafthar,
That was very informitive of game play. Thats pretty standard of how flight looks in space MMO's such as SWG and others. Like many here, I still want to walk around my ship and meet my crew. I hope the ground game is good by the time of release.
Still waiting for something to make me think this isn't a pretty sci-fi version of Pirates of The Burning Sea.
imo you cant even begin to compare the 2 >.0
From what's been released the ship to ship combat seems similar, PoTBS also touted that you'd be able to go ashore and swash buckle it up but in their rush to release they forgot to polish. In the end the product suffered because the developer had tried to juggle too many play mechanics instead of focusing and fine tuning one of them. The result was a product that demanded subscription to repair the mistakes made on the design table, lay offs ensued and now the game is barely hanging on. I see too many similarities and I wonder if you're just too caught up in the idea to take a step back and look at what could potentially disastrous.
Another reason to be afraid is that Cryptic is still very tight lipped about game play, interface and basic mechanics, yet their marketing department is still tossing out screen shots like they're dealing cards. They're generating hype but then they're not responding to customer concerns which is going to generate negative word of mouth which is something you really don't want on the Internet.

You can do that also. As the poster you quoted tried to tell you... Go to the STO site it's all there.
As for the screen shots it seems to be shaping up nicely. Hope they move to the closed beta cycle soon.
The cinematic screenshots are nice but how about the gameplay? How could people get interested if all we can see are screenshots of some storyline in the game.

There is a video clearly showing you can do exactly this, with a Cryptic presenter talking about how. JYCowboy is just trying to turn you off to the game.

No, I really don't want to turn anyone off of the game. I even plan to play. What I don't endorse is the lack of more technical aspects of the game that are more in theme with Star Trek. Star Trek is not about combat. Combat is what happens when deplomancy breaks down. True, the Klingons shoot first but not without some provocation or motive.
The developers think that the combat is all players care about. Have you ever been bored of combat? What makes this IP interesting is its utopian future ideal of an organized space fleet exploring the galaxy. Star Trek is about teams of explorers discovering new mysteries, finding ways to study them and negotiate agreements with new cultures.
What makes this more than a space sim with a few added sliders? I've played Starfleet Battles and Starfleet Command, what will truely set this MMO a part from those games?

it would be interesting to see a game where you could do a majority of Leveling/advancing with out combat. Honestly the first MMO to pull it off will be a hit imo. thats where a lot of mmos are bust or fail...its all about the combat system. I have heard to many times that this game or that games combat is to slow compaired to..well you all know...and so they refuse to play it because the combat mite be a hint slower paced or not Fast enough. Honestly a few games I have played that you ACTUALLY see each hit or swing was refreshing, instead of seeing just a blur of animations. :

That game is called EVE Online. You can advance all you want without ever firing a shot.
As many people seem to love EVE's advancement system as hate it because they can't "grind moar mobs to lvl faster". Cryptic is going with the system the majority of MMO's use. Safe bet on their part.

^This. Oh, and MUDS had no combat (ok, combat as we know it today, at least), were online, multiplayer. So... Zork... in friggin SPACE... with graphics... I bet the IP wouldn't cost you more than 30 or 40 bux. Good luck with that.
NPC Crewmember - captain, someone left a spanner in the plasma manifold!!!
You - Get it out of there!
DIIIIING!!!! You are now level 42 in decision making skillz! Congradulations!!!!
Ship flies off into the distance, safe once again from the ravages of chance non-combat encounters... for now....!?!?!?!?
Point is, a majority of games are combat based, because that's what is exciting. Changing out the oxygen scrubbers 1,399 times to level up really wouldn't be a great game mechanic. I'm sure you CAN do mundane tasks, but only an idiot company would post screenshots of that to hype up their product. Be aware that companies won't be posting screenshots of such trivial tasks to sell their product, that's what the website descriptions, dev logs, and other more mundane communication outlets are for. Space ships, lasers, and evil half-robot zombie vampires, however, sell product.

I play eve , so I can all talk down to peeplez n stuff. Cuz ....we're leet over here. If you play wow n stuff, you cant even , like , talk to us n junk.....cuz...ummmm were hardcore up in here. We are soooo much better than you it isn't even funny.
Iam, I believe he was kind of poking fun at exactly that. Doesn't look like that was his intention, to sound condescending to anybody except the people that don't understand there is more than one way to advance. I could be wrong, but that's what I got from it, and the basis for my personal agreement.

I wonder if you are able to avoid going on planets all together and just stay in space/use space stations the whole time.

Oh my god, I was always a fan and grew up with TNG and still haven't watched the new movie after hearing all about it.
But this is the biggest laugh I've had in a VERY long time, I just cannot describe my shock.....how can you even put this out in the public????
Come On people, please I am hoping you don't support utter crap like this, hell even 90% of the free stuff is better than what I see there!!!!
Thanks Nafthar,

Nice screens!
This game even makes the Galaxy Class look good, and I generally hate the design of that ship with a passion...

No, I really don't want to turn anyone off of the game. I even plan to play. What I don't endorse is the lack of more technical aspects of the game that are more in theme with Star Trek.
