Star Trek Online News - New Trailer!

Posted by Michael Bitton on Oct 16, 2009  | 33 comments in our forums

A new part CG, part gameplay trailer for Star Trek Online is now available over at IGN. The trailer, as always, features explosive action, though the tone of this trailer seems to take a bit of an anti-Federation, pro-Klingon slant.

Watch the trailer here!

Yeah nice vid. I just hope it's not all against AI controlled players. I want a challenge not another boring grind fest.

Looks like a flashy high budget trailer. Nothing of notable interest.

Its funny that the CG parts show what people really wanted from a ST game. Interiors and bridge crews.

If the line mythic says holds true "People do not want to be scotty" or "People do not want to use consoles"  then why keep including it in your tailors?

People do not want to be scotty for 12 hour shifts. People do not want to stare at a console for 12 hour shifts.

Vast difference between say, a CG trailer or a 45 minute episode showing lots of action when they're at their stations, and playing a game for many hours on end.

My impression was, it might become a cool game, but it has IMO zero to do with what Star Trek stood for.

/agree.  It's a trailer...  Every time you see a CG trailer for a game, do you assume those parts will be in the game?  That's why they use CG trailers, to make it more appealing.  I can only speak for myself, but I would hate to have to sit in front of a computer watching a virtual character sit in front of a computer for hours.  This is not a Star Trek sim, and shouldn't be.  Like every other game, they are trying to make it as exciting as possible by cutting out many of the boring things you would have to deal with otherwise.  Sure, there are people that would like to have this and have it be a true Star Trek sim, but it would be terribly hard to make such a thing and you would be dramatically cutting your intended customer base to just the hard-core trekkers.

Showing the bridge crew shows the humanity and personalizes the encounter beyond "ship vs ship".  It adds to the context of the encounter.  It does not mean people have some weird console fetish.

Can I just say how lame this game is.   Why do I say that?  The ground battles look horrible.  The animations look really bad.   The combat with phasers looks...cheesy, seriously, it looks so cheesy when a target can be spammed so many times by a phaser.  LOL!    The space battles just look...I dunno...::sigh::...sad.    Nothing to go, "That was totally wicked!"

Think I'll pass.

Jeez for pete's sake just quit it already, can't ever read a star trek thread without someone saying "Oh cryptic don't know what trek stands for!" Yea.... and you do right? After they've read piles of novels and watched piles and piles of videos and movies while snoring on their popcorn you think you know more than them? I'd like to see you make the game and manage to satisfy not just yourself but everyother person in the known gaming world.

Great vid, t'was full of action.

It doesn't matter, this isn't a ST game, its an E&B clone. But apparently, after making three games with the star trek title, making another DIKU... IN SPACEEEEEE!!!! Is a financially sound idea, and what the people want. I guess the third time is the charm, and it is mythic we are talking about. It worked so well three times before, and people just loved it.

The trailer was lackluster but seeing as how most trailers bare hardly any resemblance to their games it matters little. Never understood why they need to start marketing mmo's so far in advance of any real decent official in-game footage, by the time it releases people are bored shitless.

haha, great observation Mrbloodworth.  They'll use interiors to sell the game, but not really have them; a little bait and switch if you ask me.  And it's also funny that if they thought the game was so exciting without interiors, why not simply have a trailers without them? Either your game stands on what you actually have or it doesn't.

Because I'll tell you what, the most interesting, exciting, and engaging part of that trailer was when I was on the bridge.

Why must everyone think that those who don't wish to play as a starship captain want to "stare at a console for 12 hour shifts" or be in a trek sim? Being Scotty doesn't have to mean that you can only do X. Frankly, it's being unimaginative to think like that.

I LOVE when people say this. Know what game i was first told I "wouldn't be missed" in was? Vanguard. Know the next time I heard it?  Age of Conan. Why don't you ask those companies if they miss the thousands of "complainers" who were told they wouldn't be missed.

moronic response is moronic.

That said, I'm looking forward to this game.

The federation ships in the trailer look a bit outdated. They look like they were inspired by the latest Star Trek movie and not an evolution of the original timeline as promised. However, in every other video I've seen, the ships are as expected.

And yeah, I agree with the above poster who stated how they're making a cinematic that's inner ship perspective, but they've sworn off that as not exciting enough. Ironic that it's exciting enough for a cinematic trailer, but not for actual gameplay.

btw, I heard that when you group up with your friends, who are also starship captains, if you beam down to a planet, it immediately becomes a diplomatic mission whatever it would have been otherwise. (That's a joke of course, simply playing on the absurdity of that situation in this universe.)

That should be a warning to you.

Warhammer's videos rocked. The game didn't. Same for Hellgate.

Could you please link me to the article where they said they won't have interiors in the game? Because I remember reading about customizable interiors or maybe I'm just seeing things.

MMO devs aren't known for their imagination - and forum fanboys aren't known for having two brain cells to rub together.

12 hour shifts is ridiculous of course, as almost no one is going to be playing any MMO for such extended periods. Regardless of the content. No one is going to want to sit at a console for x hours? Like, say - staring at a monitor while typing on a keyboard? It's just an irrational exageration used by shoot-em-up fans.
