I tell ya, only in the ST universe could a game developer find a great workaround for not directly including PvP in the game.  Apparently you'll be able to set up PvP close combat and ship battles in the Holodeck.

That got me to thinking of how much of a range of options players will be given to set up Holodeck scenarios.  Surely there'll have to be some limitations, perhaps something along the lines of giving you 5 or 6 general design options, and then having the scenario, (which I assume will be instanced), randomly generated.  Any other ideas?

Another thought I had, was this could be a danger to the game as a whole.  Make the Holodeck too much fun and inviting, and you'd have whole planets deserted because people are just creating their own scenarios and not bothering with the game.  Any comments?

I am looking forward to pvp. hopefully it will be like in guild wars were you should or have to do the rpg part of the game. so there will be an even amount of people on the planets and the holodeck.

CANT WAIT FOR THIS GAME TO COME OUT!!!!!!

I've never played GW, so I'm not sure what kind of checks and balances they have to get people into the RP.

I just hope Perpetual comes up with something decent.  Man.  We've got a ways to go.

Well I think there are some inherent discouragments to staying in the holodeck the whole time:

  • No character advancement: You won't be gaining any skills or rank in the holodeck, you'll have a static character, and with limited scenarios, there is a limit to the replayability
  • Limited interaction: No matter how good the servers or game engine, there is a limit to how many players will be able to take part in any given holodeck program. Most of the interpersonal interaction will occur outside of the holodeck, likely in one of the 'hubs' they've described (e.g. starbases, galaxy class or larger ships, planetary cities)
  • storyline: Likely little to none of the stroyline will be taking place on the holodeck. Anyone who cares about events larger than their own character will most likely be playing in the 'real' universe to take part in the unfolding conflict
  • Crew relations: Let's face it, you're not helping your ship's crew any on the holodeck. You're not completing any missions, you're not upgrading any ship's systems, and you're not making any repairs. There's a heck of a lot of impetus to leave the holodeck if you intend to have much relations with your ship's crew [I'm sure there will be 'crews', i.e. clans, who will focus on the holodeck aspects of the game, but in terms of aiding your ship 'crew' the holodeck isn't.]

On some sites there has been discussion of limiting the amount of time a player can spend in the holodeck. After all, the holodeck is meant to be a leisure activity. Secondary to your duty as a Starfleet Officer.

I can definitely see some people wanting to spend at least the vast majority of their game time in the holodeck; but I sincerely doubt it will become a danger to the game.

It's not a matter of 'don't make the holodeck too fun' But rather -- look at all the fun you're missing by staying in there. There will be far too much going on outside the holodeck for too many people too spend their whole time in there. There's an entire (quadrant of the) galaxy out there to explore (and then some, alluded to as being available in instanced missions).

Who'd want to spend a month's worth of game-time in the holodeck,
when Risa is in the Beta Quadrant ::::39::::::40::

As am I.  I've got faith in the dev's, and I'm sure there may be a small portion of the game population that may be so casual as to spend a lot of time in the Holodeck, but as you pointed out, there's going to be so much more to see and do.

holodeck?? A virtual world in a virtual world

Are there going to be limits on how many players can enter a holoprogram?

LOL

No, nothing concrete at all yet.  Not really much, actually, except a few rough ideas.

Yeah. Imagine a game where it's set a couple hundred years in the future. Now, add the technology where you can enter a room and get a whole new game, of just about any time period...and the concept works and has continuity.

That's a ton of potential content lol.

There is a lot of potential with the holodeck. It will be interesting to see what they do with it.
