The whole idea of a Star Trek MMO just needs to ride off into the nearest nebula. I'm a long time fan of the franchise, but let's face it, folks - the whole franchise is basically dead. It's over forty years old and its glory days are over. We need to let our Star Trek heros rest in peace.
Besides, can anyone imagine just how horribly difficult it would be to make a decent MMO out of this franchise? Will there be away teams as well as ship traveling? How big will the game universe be? How large will the choice of races be? There were a LOT of races in the Star Trek universe. Where will the timeline of the game be? From TOS? TNG?
The fact that the whole idea got passed to another studio after three or four years of hype should tell us something. I hate to break the news to everyone, but it's not gonna happen, nor should it.
Meanwhile, there's always Warhammer Online or Age of Conan just around the corner!

From what I have read from Perpetual (or whatever the new name for the company is) said they are no longer working on it. Simply put STO MMO as it was announced a year or 2 ago is on indefinite hold. Until then I'm sure someone will release another StarWars MMO :). |

Whether or not the franchise is dead all depends on what sort of job JJ Abrams makes of the new movie. It'll be interesting to see if they've given up trying to satisfy long term fans and are going for a wider new generation (i.e. the PE approach

Yay more fantasy MMO that we DON'T NEED.. The industry need more SCI-FI MMO not just another sword slinging- magic missle game And Warhammer was great as a table tope RPG but the video games have just watered it down to the lame model of RTS and another (WOW clone).... http://www.speedtest.net/result/1775656162.png |

Yup, Conan is that old, but it's so old it's new again. Star Trek hasn't reached that stage yet. If J. J. Abrams handles his upcoming movie right, he might spark a whole new generation of Star Trek fans. I hope that happens, but I'm not holding my breath. I mentioned Conan and Warhammer simply because they're consistently the top two upcoming games on the hype meter.

personaly i think you are wrong its just that many developers are trying to copy wow if you look att eve they are doing realy good now since they dont have any competion in the scifi segment. I think that if they can make an imersive and a bit inventive mmo out of startrek it will be sucessful. i think that if blizzard had made world of starcraft we would have seen alot of scifi mmos on the market. Many developers lacks of creativity thats why we se alot of wow clones coming out and i dont doubt we conan and the others will be the same. |

There are other alternatives to Star Trek that you can give a try at, without abandoning the sci-fi genre. I tried Eve, but being just a ship was not very entertaining to me. After that, I gave StarQuest Online a shot and it stuck with me. For anyone who has never heard of SQO it is developed by a small company, yet is still constantly updating and growing. This game has ships to use, you play as your character, and it has a unique storyline with endless roleplaying possibilities. While the graphics can be a turn off to many, the gameplay itself is fantastic. |

Fact is that the fantasy genre has created a multi-billion dollar industry in MMO's and people are trying to cash in on it. The list of failed Sci-fi mmo's is short but is also a majority of the given titles. Frankly companies that intend to try and make a sci-fi mmo need to have two mechanics, both space and ground elements. I hate beating a horse after its been dead and rotting, but Pre-CU SWG with JTL was the best MMO I ever played. Had they worked on the bugs in both areas rather than the countless revamps it would be in the top 5 MMO's on the market still today. |

I was really hoping this game was going to bring the franchise to life again. Even though yes I may agree the franchise is dead after what, 40 years? Its a pretty good track record. But frankly, with Star Wars Galaxies and SOE, I don't think and DOUBT they can compete with them. I must say this is really sad. I hope in all hopes the vision isn't truely dead but I'm just an optimist on this one. To know where you belong is a sense of belonging. |

The reason why you see not many Sci-Fi MMO's isn't because the genre is less popular. It's because it's extremely hard to develop. It has more risks and takes a lot of guts. It's so much easier to impress people with breathtaking landscapes and give them a sense of immersion and WOW! feeling. Also Fantasy MMO's are based on ground. So you move in so called 2 Dimensions (with exception of flying mounts like in Vanguard. Pretty impressive they pulled it off finally), while in Space you always move in 3 dimensions. Wich makes it also harder. Just go outside in a midsummer clear night far from the cities and move into the mountains. Ly on the ground and look up at the clear midnight sky. Space is the most impressive sight to watch and in the same time it horrifies you. It gives you a sense of fear in how tiny we all are and how huge Space is. Where does it end? It doesn't. Because when it ends. What's behind it? Now try to get that same feeling into a Sci-Fi MMO! It's extremely hard. And it takes a hell of an ingeniuity to do it right. Sense of movement is also hard to accomplish in Space, as you want to feel you travel fast, but at the same time keep that feeling of being in a Vast Space. CCP did it pretty well with EVE Online. Breathtaking Nebulas and sense of fast movement in form of Warp tunnels when going into warp and such. -------------- I think Cryptic can pull it off making Star Trek Online. They just need to get the basics right and not wanting too much right of the bat! - Start off with the Alpha Quadrant. Other Quadrants / Sectors, races and enemies can be added later through Expansions. Start with the basic foundation and add more and new features later. The most common trap is in wanting too much in the beginning (Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan ring a bell). Cheers |
